William A. Allen married second Lydia Catherine Harrison, who was the daughter of my gg grandparents Joseph Harrison and Susan A. Slaton.  As such, Lydia was the sister of my great grandmother Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison who married William Harley (Harley) Bryan.

Robert Miller in HN 34 was the father of William A. Allen's first wife, whose given name I don't know.  Sura S. was Robert Miller's second wife, and was not the mother of William A. Allen's first wife.

Charles Allen in HN 31 was the brother of William A. Allen.

Lydia Catherine Harrison died in 1912, and William A. Allen married third Rebecca Frances (Cricket) Slaton.  Cricket Slaton was the daughter of William P. Slaton and Rebecca Swann.  As such, Cricket was the niece of my gg grandmother Susan A. Slaton.  Also, Cricket Slaton and Lydia Catherine Harrison were first cousins, with Lydia being William A. Allen's second wife and Cricket being his third wife.

Daniel (Dan) Harrison was the son of my second great grandparents Joseph Harrison and Susan A. Slaton.  As such, Dan was the brother of my great grandmother Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison who married William Harley (Harley) Bryan.

Mary Emily Ethel (Ethel) Cox was the daughter of my great grandparents George Jackson Cox and Clarissa Loretta (Retta or Rett) Nichols.  As such, Ethel was the sister of my grandmother Ruby Priscilla Cox who married Emmert Oral Bryan.  It is correct that Ethel was 13 years old when she was married.  She was only following family tradition because her mother Rett Nichols had married at the age of 12.

Dan Harrison and Ethel Cox were known to my father as Uncle Dan and Aunt Ethel.

Claude Eugene Rimmer age 8 later married first Flora B. Cox and married second Lelia Pearl Cox.  Flora and Lelia were sisters, daughters of James Harmon Cox and Ola Maud Cline.  James was the son of my second great grandparents John Tivis Cox and Nancy Ann Pierce.  As such, James was the brother of my great grandfather George Jackson Cox.

Although Claude was listed as a hired man, he was really a family member.  He was the first cousin once removed of Cornelius Rimmer and Harris Webb (Webb) Rimmer.  Claud was the son of William Rimmer and Mary Elizabeth Hart, the grandson of Joseph Warren Rimmer and Elizabeth (Bettie) Line, and the great grandson of William James Rimmer and Mary A. Whitfield.  Cornelius and Webb were sons of Joseph Warren Rimmer and Elizabeth (Bettie) Line, and grandsons of William James Rimmer and Mary A. Whitfield.

Samuel B. Shrader and Mary A. Kincannon were the parents of William Arnold (Will) Shrader and Henry C. Shrader.  Will and Henry were brothers who married the sisters Jessie Pearl Cox and Grace A. (Gracie) Cox, respectively.

Jessie and Gracie were the daughters of William Nelson Cox and Mary Ella (Ella) Cline.  As such, Jessie and Gracie were nieces of my great grandfather George Jackson Cox.

The birthplaces for all the children should have been TN MO GA.  Eugene's birthplaces were probably listed differently than the other siblings because his listing was on the next page.

The two children not listed were Daniel W. Shrader who died in 1895 and Joseph Blaine Shrader who died in 1981.  So Mary should have been listed with 7 children, 6 living.

Slaton.

Mahala Slaton married Ezekial Harrison (Harrison) Williams on 24 Aug 1907 at about the age of 45.  It was her first marriage, and there was no issue.

Stella was the daughter of Arthur Rickard and Victoria Van Dyke.

William Nelson Cox was the son of my second great grandparents John Tivis Cox (see HN 141 below) and Nancy Ann Pierce.  As such, William was the brother of my great grandfather George Jackson Cox.  William was born 31 Jul 1878 and died 10 Jan 1939.  He married Ella Cline.  Based on this census entry, Ella's name must have been Mary Ella Cline and she was known as Ella.  Roy Lee Cox was born 17 Oct 1893 and married Obie Lillian (Lillian) Howell.  Jessie Pearl Cox was born 9 Jan 1895 and married Will Schrader.  Grace Cox was born 18 Sep 1896 and married H.C. John David Harrison was the son of my second great grandparents Joseph Harrison and Susan A. Slaton.  As such, John was the brother of my great grandmother Nancy Virginia (Nannie) Harrison and the children were first cousins of my grandfather Emmert Oral Bryan.

It is very strange so see the listing for "John Harrison Jr." because John's full name was John David Harrison and his father was Joseph Harrison.  Also, his wife was listed as his daughter even though both of them were married and had been married to each other for seven years.  Finally, the spelling of Jacob William (Jake) Harrison's given name was very creative.

Lillie May Moore was the daughter of Samuel Walker (Walker) Moore and Laura Isadora Webster.  Lillie was the niece of Mary Ann Moore who married Susan Slaton's brother Frances Marion (Frank) Slaton.

Laura Susan Harrison was no doubt named for her grandmothers Laura Isadora Webster and Susan A. Slaton.  Lillie had three children, two living.  The infant who died before the 1910 census was George Walker Harrison.  He no doubt was named for his grandfather Samuel Walker Moore.

James Harmon Cox was the son of my second great grandparents John Tivis Cox and Nancy Ann Pierce (see HN 141 below).  As such, James was the brother of my g gramdfather George Jackson Cox.

Ola Maud Cline was the daughter of Erasmus Harvey (Rasmus) Cline and Julia Emily (Emily) Gass.

Flora Cox was born 27 Oct 1896, died 8 Jan 1921, married Claude Eugene Rimmer.  Ersie Cox was born 25 Sep 1898, died 29 Apr 1922.

Elmer Robert was really Robert Elmer Cox who was known as Elmer.  Elmer Cox was born 14 Mar 1901, died 12 Nov 1981, and married Lydia Ethel (Ethel) Bryan who was my grandfather's sister.  They raised my father for several years because my father's mother died shortly after he was born.

Elmer Cox and Ethel Bryan were not related (not cousins who married or anything like that), but I am related to both of them.  In particular, Ethel was the sister of my grandfather Emmert Oral Bryan and Elmer was the first cousin of Emmert's wife Ruby Priscilla Cox.

Neva Cox was born 23 Aug 1903, married Harry S. Schrader.  Lelia Pearl Cox was born 2 May 1906, married Claude Eugene Rimmer.  Claude Eugene Rimmer married first Flora Cox and married second Flora's sister Lelia after Flora died.  He had children by both sisters.  Faye Gladys Cox was born 16 Jun 1909, died 28 Jun 1911.

Both John Tivis Cox and Martha P. Reneau were my second great grandparents.  However, they had no children together.  John Tivis Cox's first wife was my second great grandmother Nancy Ann PierceMartha P. Reneau's first husband was my second great grandfather John H. Nichols.

I am not sure I agree that Lula Templin was a grandniece.  I believe she was in fact John Tivis Cox's granddaughter.  Lula was the daughter of John Templin and Emma Ella (Ella) Cox.  Ella was the daughter of my second great grandparents John Tivis Cox and Nancy Ann Pierce.  Lula was born 1 Nov 1895.  Ella Cox was born 17 July 1873 and died 14 Sep 1954.  So it's not as if Ella died young and John Tivis Cox was raising his granddaughter.  Ella was still alive in 1910, and was living in Dallas County, Texas with her second husband Joseph Rimmer and their children.

John Tivis Cox's father who was born in North Carolina was Riley Cox.

Joseph Harrison and Susan A. Slaton were my second great grandparents.

Joseph Harrison was the son of Daniel Harrison and Rhoda Maria Brown.

Susan A. Slaton was the daughter of Thomas Fielden Slaton and Rebecca Frances George.

The only child still living at home was Presley George (Press) HarrisonSusan's listing of "10 children, 1 living" is manifestly in error.  There was only one child still living at home, but nine of the children were still living.

I'm a little puzzled that Uncle Press's name was listed as George.  He was definitely known as Press, and I have his middle name listed as George.  It would seem unusual for the census to list his middle name when he was known by his first name.  Perhaps his name was really George Presley (Press) Harrison.  Finally, Uncle Press's places of birth should have been listed as TN VA NC.

Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton was the son of my third great grandparents Thomas Fielden Slaton and Rebecca Frances George.  Mary Ann Moore was the daughter of John Chaney Moore and Amanda Melseany Miller.  Frank Slaton's sister Susan Slaton was my second great grandmother.  The full names of the children listed above were Martha Paralee (Paralee or Parlee) Slaton and Ann Laura (Laura) Slaton.

Mary Anne Moore had twelve children, and nine of them were still living in 1910.  The census enumerator apparently only counted the two who were still living at home, rather than all nine.

Eva Jane and Ollie C. Free were daughters of Haskel Free and Rebecca Slaton.  Rebecca had died in 1902, and Eva and Ollie were being raised by their grandparents.  Haskel Free was still living at this point, but he didn't raise his children.  Rather he went west with two of his brothers-in-law, John Thomas Slaton and William Moses (Will) Slaton.  He lived for a while in California, but later moved to Oregon and spent most of his life there.

Minnie Ann Cox was the daughter of my great grandparents George Jackson Cox and Clarissa Loretta (Rett) Nichols.  As such, Minnie was the sister of my grandmother Ruby Priscilla Cox.

Port Slaton was the son of Francis Marion (Frank) Slaton and Mary Anne Moore.  As such, he was the nephew of my second great grandmother Susan A. Slaton.

I am distantly related to Noah Corum Elder because he was descended from Thomas Underwood and Mary Ramey, from John Underwood and Margaret Jackman, and from Capt. Robert Cate Jr. and Elizabeth Wyatt.  However, I was looking at this census entry because of the Atchley connection.  Maud I. Atchley married my great grandfather's brother Elmer Otto Bryan.  Zema Elder married Robert Hardin Atchley who was the sister of Maud I. Atchley.  So Zema was Maud Atchley's sister-in-law.

Noah Corum Elder was the son of William Riley Elder and Mary Kate (Polly or Pop) Douglous.  Apparently, Noah's sister Elizabeth Cordelia (Bettie) Elder never married, but Bettie was the mother of Zema Elder.  Viola Atchley was obviously the niece and Noah Elder was obviously the uncle, a fact that the enumerator got backwards.  Viola Atchley was the daughter of William Pinckney Atchley and Mary Douglas (Douggie) Elder.  Douggie Elder died 12 Mar 1902, so it is likely she died giving birth to Viola Atchley.

William Slaton Shurbutt's first wife was Amanda Manning (with Manning probably being the surname of Amanda's first husband).  Amanda apparently died before 1908, because William Slaton Shurbutt married Nancy about 1908.

Uncle Allen's parents were James Harvey Underwood and Sarah Catherine (Catherine) Hickman.

The Underwood family in East Tennessee was founded by four Underwood brothers, three of whom settled in Sevier County and one of whom settled in Anderson County.  I am descended from John and Thomas of Sevier County.  Uncle Allen was descended from George of Sevier County.  But because Uncle Allen married into the family, I have Underwood second cousins who are second cousins as Williamsons, but who are really only sixth cousins once removed as Underwoods.
