Charles Lee (Charlie) Bray age 38 was the son of William George Washington Green and my great grandmother Mary Mahala Jane (Mahala or Haley) Bray. As such, Uncle Charlie was the half-brother of my grandmother Lola Ethel Williamson. Haley and William Green were divorced on 9 Jan 1896. The divorce decree did not mention the restoration of Haley's maiden name, and Uncle Charlie was enumerated in the 1900 census as Charles Green. But the record of Haley's marrriage to John William Williamson in 1898 listed her name as Jane Bray. Uncle Charlie used the Bray surname in all records other than the 1900 census. Uncle Charlie was raised by his maternal grandparents (and my second great grandparents) Joseph A. (Joe) Bray and Ferriba Salina (Salina) Moore rather than by his mother Haley Bray. Kathleen Haven (Haven) Reed age 27 married Uncle Charlie 8 Jun 1919 in Loudon County. Haven was the daughter of James Monroe Reed and Hattie C. Jackson. Haven was Uncle Charlie's second wife. He had two children with his first wife Minnie Ann King, but both of them died as infants. So all the children listed in this census entry were Haven's children. Nora Haven (Haven) Bray age 6 was named for her mother and also for her aunt Nora Lee Williamson, Uncle Charlie's half-sister. Frederick Charles (or Charles Frederick) Bray age 5 was named for his father. Charles Frederick Bray was hit by a car and killed in 1935 when he was 10 years old. |
