1880 Census, Roane County, Tennessee

Dica Ann (Dicy) Smith was my ggg grandmother.  She married first my ggg grandfather Jacob England, and married second James Calvin (Calvin) Giles.  Jacob died in 1863 in the Civil War, and Dicy married Calvin Giles in 1865.  So Amanda age 19 was really Amanda England rather than Amanda Giles.

James Fletcher (Fletcher) Peters was the son of my ggg grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby Smith.  As such, Fletcher was the brother of my gg grandfather John Henry Peters.  Sarah J. Turpin was the daughter of William Turpin and Nancy Jane Wiatt.  Fletcher and Sarah were married 24 Jan 1865 in Anderson County.  Fletcher Peters in HN 204 was the brother of Blair Peters in HN 205.  Fletcher was the twin of Mary J. Peters who married James Samsel.

Washington Blair (Blair) Peters was the oldest son of my ggg grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby Smith.  As such, he was the brother of my gg grandfather John Henry Peters.

Mary Elizabeth Holder was the daughter of John W. Holder Jr. and Nancy Sumners Howard.  Blair and Mary were married 9 Nov 1865.

William R. (Will) Stalcup later married Annie E. (Annie) Bray.  Annie was the daughter my gg grandparents Joseph A. (Joe) Bray and Ferriba Salina (Salina) Moore.  As such, Annie was the sister of my g grandmother Mary Mahala Jane (Mahala or Haley) Bray.

Will was the son of Peter M. Stalcup and Rachel Clevenger.

I believe that William Green age 12 was the first husband of my g grandmother Mary Mahala Jane (Mahala or Haley) Bray.  Their marriage record says that his name was W. G. W. Green.  Their divorce record says that his name was William Green.  I list his name in my records as William G. W. Green, and I believe that his full name was probably William George Washington Green.

There were other William Greens in the census who might be candidates to have been Haley Bray's first husband.  It is difficult to be certain which William Green it might have been because we have no direct knowledge of his birth date and we have no direct knowledge of the names of his parents.  This particular William Green is a promising candidate because he was born about 1868 and Haley was born about 1871, because Roane County is adjacent to Loudon County where William and Haley were married, and because of the 1870 census entry for this family.  There is some ambiguity in the 1870 census entry, but William's name was listed in 1870 either as W. G. Green or as W. G. W. Green.  There were no William Greens in Loudon County in the 1880 census.  There was a William H. Green in Roane County born about 1878, but he was too young and he had the wrong middle initial.  There was a William T. Green in Roane County born about 1870, but he had the wrong middle initial.

Isaac P. Green age 32 was the son of George Washington Green and Nancy F. Gasperson.  It seems likely that William G. W. Green was named either for "the" George Washington, or else was named for his grandfather George Washington Green.

William Green and Haley Bray had one child, Charles Lee Green.  Charles later changed his name to Charles Lee Bray and was known in the family as Uncle Charlie Bray.  Uncle Charlie was the half brother of my grandmother Lola Ethel Williamson, Haley Bray having married second to my g grandfather John William Williamson.

Tobias Peters Jr. was the son of Tobias Peters Sr. and Elizabeth Rachel Scarborough.  The three sons who were enumerated were Tobias Jr.'s sons by his second wife Martha Miranda Mays.  Martha died in 1878, two years prior to the 1880 census.

Scerphona was Safrona C. (Froney) Cross.  The couple was married in 1877 in Roane County.  Mary A. Scarbrough was William's daughter from a previous marriage.  Froney Scarbrough and her husband William Scarbrough were parties to an 1888 Cross family lawsuit concerning the disposition of some inherited land.  Froney Scarbrough was an heir of Polly Cross in the suit, but it is not totally clear who Polly Cross was.  Polly was the legatee of the real estate of William Cross the Revolutionary War drummer boy, but whether she was a daughter, a daughter-in-law, etc. is not known for sure.

William Scarbrough was the son of Allen Albert Scarbrough and Mary Ervin.  It is believed that Allen Albert Scarbrough was not of the Bucks County, Pennsylvania line of Scarbroughs.

Benjamin Leach Peters was the son of Tobias Peters Jr. and Martha Miranda Mays.  Benjamin's wife was Amanda C. Hacker.  They were married 16 Sep 1879 in Roane County.  The house number and family number look funny because there is already a house number 204 and already a family number 205.  I need to verify this in the microfilm.

It is believed that Albert Allen Scarbrough was not from the Bucks County line of Scarbroughs.  I do not know Mary's maiden name.  I do not know who the father of the grandchildren was.  Albert age 14 was evidently named for his father.

James W. Fritts age 8 married Laura Peters, daughter of Thomas J. Peters and Charlotte J. (Sharlley) Shannon.  Thomas J. Peters was the son of my ggg grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby Smith.  As such, Thomas was the brother of my gg grandfather John Henry Peters.

James W. Fritts was the son of George Washington Fritts and Martha Helen Bunn.

Charles Nelson Peters was the son of my ggg grandparents John W. Peters and Ruby Smith.  As such, Charles was the brother of my gg grandfather John Henry Peters.  Charles was married in 1883, not too long after the 1880 census was taken.

Alex was Alexander L. Williamson, born 3 Jan 1855.  Margaret was Margaret Ann England, born 5 Mar 1852.  They were married 18 Apr 1874 in Monroe County, Tennessee.  They were my gg grandparents.  John age 3 was my g grandfather John William Williamson who married my g grandmother Mahala Jane Bray.  Amanda apparently died young because she is not in the Williamson Family Bible.

Trion McFarland Williamson and Catharine were my ggg grandparents.  They were the parents of my gg grandfather Alexander L. (Alex) Williamson from HN 276.

At the time of the 1880 census, Cynthia Ann Williamson was married to Samuel Silvey (they had married in 1872).  But Samuel had abandoned Cynthia in 1874, and Cynthia was living with her parents at the time of the 1880 census.  Cynthia was divorced from Samuel in 1885.  George age 6 was the son of Samuel Silvey and Cynthia Ann Williamson.  I do not know if he later was known as George Silvey or as George Williamson.

Trion McFarland Williamson was born in Moore County, North Carolina, the son of William Williamson and Elizabeth.  There was a court house fire in Moore County in 1889.  So I have not been able to find marriage records for Trion and Catharine, nor for William and Elizabeth.  I do not have the surname for Catharine nor for Elizabeth.

William Lafayette Blair was the son of John B. Blair and Mary Johnson.  His first wife was Susan Stegell Williams.  My interest in him is that his second wife was Jennie Eliza (Eliza) England, daughter of my ggg grandparents Jacob England and Dica Ann (Dicy) Smith.  William and Eliza were married about 1891.

Elijah Walker Peters was the son of Tobias Peters Jr. and Tobias' second wife Martha Miranda (Marthy) Mays.  Elijah's wife was Mary Jane Sylvey, daughter of Clarissa Seiber and Jesse Sylvey.

William Johnson Letsinger age 20 was the father of Samuel Mabry Letsinger.  Samuel Mabry Letsinger (Uncle Sam) married my grandfather's sister Elza Cordelia Peters (Aunt Elzie).

Michael May Jr. was the son of Michael May Sr. and Catharine Detemer.  As such, Michael Jr. was the nephew of my gggg grandmother Margarethe Elizabeth (Peggy) May.

Edward Payne Bray was my ggg grandfather.  My ggg grandmother was his first wife Anna F. Messamore.  His second wife was Martha (Patsy) Sweet.  All the children listed above were children of Martha (Patsy) Sweet, all the children of Anna F. Messamore having married or otherwise moved out prior to 1880.  I don't know who Lily M. Bray's parents were.  Her father was probably a son of Anna F. Messamore.

Lafayette Jackson Wall was the son of John Daniel Wall and John's first wife Ruth E. Dakin.  John's second wife was Emilia (Emily) Bray, daughter of my ggg grandparents Edward Payne Bray and Anna F. Messamore.  As such, Emily was the sister of my gg grandfather Joseph A. (Joe) Bray.

Lafayette's wife was Martha E. Ballew.

Emelia/Emily (Milly) Bray was the daughter of my ggg grandparents Edward Payne Bray and Anna F. Messamore.  As such, she was the sister of my gg grandfather Joseph A. (Joe) Bray.

Milly Bray married John Daniel Wall 24 Dec 1868 in Anderson County, Tennessee.  Shadrack E. Wall is the line of James E. Wall.

James Isaac Dail was the son of William Riley Dail Sr. and Nancy Overton.  Sarah W. Hall was the daughter of L.T. Hall.  One of the daughters of James Isaac Dail and Sarah W. Hall was Nancy E. (Nannie) Dail, b. about 1844.  Nannie Dail married James Wiley (Wiley) Peters, son of Wesley M. Peters and Katherine Paul.  Emma P. Peters was probably the daughter of James Wiley (Wiley) Peters and Nannie Dail.

Harriet M. (Hattie) England age 20 was the daughter of my ggg grandparents Jacob England and Dica Ann (Dicy) Smith.  As such, she was the sister of my gg grandmother Margaret Ann (Maggie) England.  Jacob England died in the Civil War and Dicy Smith married second to James Calvin (Calvin) Giles.  Therefore, some records list Hattie as Harriet Giles or Hattie Giles.

Hattie's husband was John C. Carroll.
