The Boat

Valhalla is a 1983 Catalina 30, standard rig, fin keel. She is Hull Number 3283.

We bought her in May, 2003 in St. Joseph, Michigan.

The main and 150 furling genoa are both Sobstad XVS sails.

The Harken furler is quite reliable and smooth operating. I have the control line leading out along the starboard side, through blocks on the lifeline stanchion bases, back to the cockpit. A small cleat outboard on the cockpit coaming secures this line.

Two Lewmar 7 single speed winches are mast-mounted for the halyards.

The standard wire halyards have since been replaced with all rope (3/8" STA-Set X).

The dodger is great, as it covers the wide companionway, offering shade below and protection from wind and rain.

It does have a drawback, in that it is harder to get around when moving in and out of the cockpit to the forward locations. One of these days I'll try beefing up the frame to provide a more secure handhold.

A Lewmar 16ST single speed self-tailing winch mounted on the cabin top handles the mainsheet.

The Catalina 30 has mid-boom sheeting, with the traveler mounted on the cabin top.

2 Lewmar 40ST dual-speed, self-tailing winches mounted on the cockpit coamings make short work of controlling the genoa sheets.

The topping lift is 1/8" 7x19 wire.

I plan to shorten it and install a small block and tackle for easier adjustments. One day (when budget allows, I'd like to get a rigid vang, replacing the need for a topping lift altogether.

A swim ladder is part of the rear pulpit, and swings down for use.

The galley has a double sink, served by a pressurized freshwater tank. The extra spigot between the sinks provides lake water for rinsing, etc. It is operated by a foot pump.

A double burner alcohol stove and oven take care of the hot meals.

The Catalina 30 came with a traditional or dinette table arrangement. This is the dinette.

The hanging locker holds our foul weather gear. Four handy drawers stow games, hand towels and other small items.

An AM/FM/CD player is mounted here, and drives 2 cabin speakers and 2 cockpit speakers.

Mini blinds offer shade and privacy. The head is to the left and includes a shower. The V-berth is visible forward.

The navigation station is conveniently situated just off the companionway. A hinged top creates a storage space for charts, pencils and other small items. 2 ship's batteries and a tool box are in the lower half. A lot gets packed in a small space!

The quarterberth is used mainly for storing cockpit cushions and PFDs.

We find the C30 easy to dock, and will turn on a dime even in close quarters. We have the 5411 diesel, enough to get us in and out of harbor. Later models typically came with the higher output M25.
