Cyndy Clauss has been interested in
color and fibers since her childhood on a west central Indiana
farm. Born in Lafayette, Indiana, and growing up south of
Wolcott, she started creating garments as a preteen on her
grandmother’s converted (to electricity) Singer treadle sewing
machine. She has explored weaving, and quilting as well as
garment construction.
Surface design, which includes hand-dyeing,
stenciling, burning, chemical color discharge, stamping and
painting, gives her almost endless ways to express her
fascination with color and texture. She has also explored using
a variety of materials, both new and recycled/repurposed. Her
current interests include: overdyeing repurposed silk from
garments and using the silk for stitched collage; wool sweaters
that she felts and uses to construct new garments; and using her
hand-dyed fabrics to create one of a kind art.
Cyndy creates wearables, (scarves, socks,
and garments), two dimensional wall art (collage and art
quilts), and three dimensional sculptural objects (felt and silk
fusion). Her work has been purchased by Ivy Tech for its
permanent collection, leased by Purdue University, exhibited at
the Indianapolis Art Center, the Greater Lafayette Museum of
Art, and at the Dittmar Gallery at Northwestern University among
others. Some of her pieces have been purchased and given around
the world.
Cyndy's work is available at
Artists' Own, located
at 518 Main Street, Lafayette, IN .
