But Stephen, you say. You haven't said a damn thing about the impending baseball season. What gives?
Well, for one thing, as this is only the third post of the month, I haven't said much about just about anything. But if you think I've overlooked the opening of the season, you're high as a kite.
In fact, I've even gone so far as to do a little--a very little--number crunching and come up with some predictions for the upcoming campaign. Without further ado, my picks:
NATIONAL LEAGUE |
AMERICAN LEAGUE |
||
|---|---|---|---|
| CENTRAL | CENTRAL | ||
| Milwaukee | 91-71 | Detroit | 90-72 |
| Chicago | 84-78 | Cleveland | 88-74 |
| St. Louis | 80-82 | Chicago | 81-81 |
| Houston | 79-83 | Minnesota | 80-82 |
| Cincinnati | 78-84 | Kansas City | 71-91 |
| Pittsburgh | 65-97 | ||
| EAST | EAST | ||
| Philadelphia | 92-70 | New York | 90-72 |
| Florida | 84-78 | Toronto | 81-81 |
| New York | 81-81 | Baltimore | 79-83 |
| Atlanta | 79-83 | Boston | 75-87 |
| Washington | 65-97 | Tampa Bay | 71-91 |
| WEST | WEST | ||
| Los Angeles | 87-75 | Los Angeles | 93-69 |
| San Diego | 84-78 | Oakland | 84-78 |
| San Francisco | 78-84 | Texas | 80-82 |
| Arizona | 71-91 | Seattle | 78-84 |
| Colorado | 69-93 | ||
In the above scenarios, I see the Chicago Cubs getting the National League wild card--see, all that spending did pay off--after a one game playoff*, and of course the Cleveland Indians taking the AL wild card (by virture of having the best non-division winning record). What happens after that is anyone's guess.
*These numbers are (naturally) highly speculative, and based largely on last season's stats, not necessarily player career stats. The curse of not having internet access at home--I just didn't have access to all the stats. I don't really expect these teams to finish with these records; there are simply too many variables, including mid-season roster changes. These numbers are "broad outline" numbers; that is, the Yankees won't win 90 games on the dot (though they might...), but will win the division with a record that's fairly close to what's above.
So there you have it. Now run out and place your bets before everyone else gets his hands on this hot and juicy info. Check back here in six months to see how right (!) I was.
Currently watching: movies, movies, movies; mainly the continuing haul from the free HBO weekend. (More of that to come, by the way--they're doing it again this coming weekend. Don't forget to peek at Reel Reviews for the produce of these efforts.
Currently reading: about to begin Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Don't ask why.
Currently listening to: in my car, rolling through a bunch of my U2 CDs. I listen to the iPod so much that sometimes it's refreshing to hear an actual album played start to finish. In other venues, I've been checking out Smodcast, the weekly podcast put out by director Kevin Smith and producer Scott Mosier. Funny as all hell, kind of like listening to the shoot-the-breeze sessions that blossomed into movies like Clerks and Chasing Amy. Not to be missed, as long as you have a high tolerance for foul language. Search for it on iTunes; it's probably in one of the 'most popular' lists.

Aye, things have not been moving apace here at c&cp. For one thing, I've been sick the past week. For another, HBO had a free preview a couple of weeks ago, and I recorded a shitload of cinema those days, and have been watching a lot of that ever since. Some results of that will be found in Reel Reviews. Oh, yeah, and I've been busy at work. So don't give me shite about not posting. Not that anyone ever does anyway. But I'm about recovered from my cold, and work has been lighter this week, and I have to run out of movies sometime, so the sleepwalking may be coming to a near end. Let's hope.

Last Friday I strolled into the local JCPenney's, intending to buy a gift card. This was not to give a gift to someone, other than myself. The intention was to use the gift card to pay for an online purchase, and thus avoid dinging my now-paid-off credit card with an unwanted charge. But, while I was there, I browsed the selection in the store, and there just happened to be a sale going on, and there just happened to be an extra discount event going on, and...the bottom line: instead of buying two shirts and one pants via the website, I wound up getting four shirts (two 't', two button front) and a pair of shorts for a total of $46 plus change, versus the $77+ I was going to spend online for almost half the quantity of clothing. This haul included a long-sleeve, button front Van Heusen shirt--originally labeled at $50--for the crisp price of $2.41. Yeah, that's about a 95% total discount. Apparently, I am the proverbial smart shopper. Groovy.
