Summit Lake

The Ol' Swimmin' Hole

Here's a nice little shot of Summit Lake up in Lassen Volcanic National Park. Despite the name, the lake isn't near the summit; it sits at a managable elevation of 6800 feet. This is where I did my swimming during my recent trip to the park. A cool dip makes for a great feeling after a long, sweaty hike. (Click the image for a full sized view.)

Katie's Drawing

Which Way To The Louvre?

When last I visited my sister's house, I was presented with the drawing above by my niece Katie. She made it specifically for me. Imagine my surprise when I asked what it was, and was informed that it's a picture of me! I felt I should protest, but really, I am quite doughy and ill-defined. So I guess it's accurate. And there you go. (The writing on the left was added by my sister; Katie, at 3 years old, is not such a prodigy as that.)

Carry On Kitty

Would This Bag Clear Airport Security?

It's been a while since I featured a Hairy Thing in the POTM--thus, I give you Maxi, apparently jonesing to go traveling at a moment's notice. Alas, I can't see her being all good with being stored in the overhead bin.

Book-Readin' Boy

Christopher turned one year old a week or so ago. For some reason, he immediately decided that this made him able to read. Foolish child. Doesn't he know he's embarking upon a dangerous path. Today, Dora the Explorer; tomorrow, Hunter S. Thompson. If we're lucky.

Ah, Metaphors!

This is a look at a fallen sequoia tree at Grant Grove in Kings Canyon National Park. I think they call this the "Fallen Giant." Yes, you can walk through it. So what do you think, metaphor-wise: is there light at the end of the tunnel? Or is it all just dark, all the way through? Something to ponder as you view this POTM.

Boxicat

Oh, that Maxicat! Even when she's just chillin' out, laying down for a brief nap in a discarded appliance box, you still know she's up to no good. That look in the eyes says it all. Beware the meow-y maven of mischief.

A Samson Moment

There it is--my hair, laying on the bathroom floor. I shaved it, back on Cinco. Now, almost two weeks later, I've got a layer of fuzz, but my head stays much cooler. How's that for a 'supercut'?

Artistic Inside and Out

Here's a view of the monorail station at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. I took this shot as I was about to leave, waiting for the train to come and take me down to the parking garage. I was struck by the geometry of the structure, and thought it made for an interesting picture. The poor quality is due to this being snapped with my camera phone. Generic Nature Shot #7842

This photo is hardly "of the moment" since I took it last month, on or around Feb. 16, but hey, why should you guys suffer because I'm lazy? It's one of those standard, cliché snaps looking up the trunks of a cluster of redwoods--in this case part of the Bohemian Grove at Muir Redwoods Nat'l Monument in Marin County. So there you go--don't say I never took you anyplace.

I Frump, Therefore I Am

The nephew Christopher, in all his glory. That boy never met a frown he didn't love. Just see for yourself. (Click the image for a full sized view.)

Wake Me When I'm No Longer A Newborn

So there he is, my nephew Christopher, just a few hours after he was born (on Nov. 18th). He turned out a little bit turnipy, but otherwise looking better than the average newborn. All seems well with mom and baby and family. (Click the image for a full sized view.)

N scale locomotive

Train, Not In Vain

Comin' at ya, my newly acquired rolling stock. Yes, I've decided to take a long-desired plunge and develop a model train hobby. The locomotive above is from a starter set, which will be the showcase of a soon-to-be developed N-scale model railroad layout. It's not just a longstanding wish fulfilled, it's highly appropriate, too. (Note the cat in the Chessie logo; open the full size image for a better view.)

Mom and Gussycat Collared

Who You Callin' "Wonderful Pig"?

Such is my life, that the only houseguests I ever have are of the eight legged kind. Like that one up there, who was hanging out by my bathroom sink the other evening. And they're getting bigger all the time. Imagine my surprise when I was bending over the basin brushing my teeth and saw that thing about nine inches away from my face. For reference, that's the bottom of a standard sized bathroom spigot (hot water, if that's important) that you're seeing on the left. The whole creature was a good 1 to 1.5 inches toe to toe. Not a tarantula, but more than big enough to get the boot via the Dust Devil.

Mom and Gussycat Collared

Not Quite A Blooming Flower...

That's Mom hugging the Gussycat, one day after surgery to remove his cancerous spleen. We're not sure yet how he's doing, but I'm cautiously optimistic that he will hang around for a little while. I'm thinking about him every day, and I hope folks out there can say a prayer or two for him as well.

Here Comes The Bulimia...

Caught young Katie in a ballerina pose recently. Can there be any doubt that an eating disorder is soon to follow? I thought not.

Finger Follies

Don't say I never shared anything with you. There it is, the visual proof of what I did to my left index finger, three days after the unkind cut. Juicy, eh? As they say, kids, don't try this at home.

Rarely Seen

That is a sight rarely seen here in the Bay Area: snow on Mt. Diablo. The 3800+' peak is usually sunny and bright, without a trace of flakes even in winter. On this day it was just a sprinkling on the upper reaches, but just a few days before this shot almost the top third of the mountain was white. No wonder I haven't been able to get out on my bike much lately!

It's the Catsignal! To the Catcave!

The Maxicat shows off her introspective side, checking out her shadow on the ceiling. You get such wonderful perspectives when you jump atop every tall piece of furniture in the apartment.

Happy Little Elf

Once again, my niece Katie shows her holiday spirit. That girl is a soon-to-be walking, soon-to-be talking calendar.
