Chris’s Crazy CakeChocolate Flower (Theobroma cacao)

The secret of this cake is the reaction of the soda and the vinegar making air bubbles in the cake. This is why the dry and wet ingredients are mixed separately. This recipe came from the Depression, when eggs and dairy were less available. Makes one 8in Pan.

Dry Ingredients
1 1/2 c Flour
1 c  Sugar
6 T  Cocoa powder
1 tsp  Baking soda

Wet Ingredients
1 T  Vanilla
6 T  Vegetable oil
1 T  Vinegar
1 c  Water

Icing if desired

Preheat oven to 325 F

Mix dry ingredients with spoon. Mix vanilla, oil, water and vinegar separately. Mix the wet and dry ingredients together and let the mix stand for 1 minute. Pour into a lightly oiled 8 inch pan and bake for approximately 30-40 minutes. Touch center of cake with fingers.  When it springs back, it’s done! Spread icing on top and sides and garnish with strawberries, raspberries, fresh mint, or fresh rose petals.
