For the last two years I stayed at the Hotel-Café de Munt in Geertruidenberg, about 2 miles from the Raamsdonksveer festival site. A highly enjoyable experience. Each night the hotel's café was filled with regulars shooting pool, play darts and, one of the major Dutch pastimes, enjoying the bar. The downtown square, empty here, is filled with merchants on Friday afternoon with the city market. Geertruidenberg is the oldest fortified town in Holland tracing it's history back to 645 and incorporation to 1213. At the top of the square is "Sint Geertruids kerk" (St. Gertrudis church) the French gothic style Basilican church.

There are several indoor-outdoor cafes on the main street of the city. Part of the church over the rooftop across from the hotel.Community ladder is used by husbands who have been out drinking all night and want to enter their homes without disturbing their wives.

City church. City market on Friday afternoon -- just opening.

Stalls are stocked with everying from clothing, shoes, hardware, toys and flowers ... ...to fresh vegetables.

Until we next 'meet' in Holland
