MARDI GRAS CRAFTS CLASS ANNOUNCEMENT

We are adding a new crafts class activity this year that involves creating your own “Jamaica Mon” T-shirt with a fringed bottom with fun beads on it. Probably a better look for the gals than for the guys, but hey – equal opportunity in these crafts classes, as we know! We will have a limited supply of (inexpensive) solid colored T-shirts available for you to decorate and to play with, but if you want to bring your own T-Shirt for this activity, please do!

HOW BIG IS YOUR CARRY-ON?

From the Washington Post, October 26

DEPARTMENT Of SHRINKAGE

How Big Is Your Carry-On?

Honey, I shrank your carry-on! As of Nov. 1,
Continental Airlines is reducing the size of allowed carry-on luggage; the total measurement (height plus length plus width) is decreasing from 51 inches to
45 inches, which is in line with most of the other legacy carriers (US Airways still allows 51 inches; AirTran, meanwhile, allows a whopping 55 inches). What motivated the shrinkage?

Julie King of Continental explains that "the driving reason is to align our policies with [those] of our alliance partners," including
Delta, Northwest, Air France and KLM. "You want it to be seamless for the traveler," so a Continental passenger won't have to check her 51-inch carry-on when connecting to, say, a Delta flight. Makes sense to us.

ANSWERS TO YOUR EMAILED QUESTIONS:

There is lots of great info in the "Know Before You Go" brochure from Carnival. We know we have sent you way too many things to read, but most of what you want to know really is in there somewhere! There is also a link on the Carnival website to most of the answers to your questions (same info as in the brochure). This might be easier for you to read than sifting through the whole brochure.

Go the main Carnival page at
www.carnival.com, then look all the way at the bottom under "Already Booked?" then click "Know Before You Go" or just go here for some very detailed answers to Frequently Asked Questions: http://www.carnival.com/CMS/FAQs/FAQLanding.aspx

LUGGAGE/BAGGAGE: Scroll down the topic list until you see what you want -- Baggage Information, for example. Click on it and there are more details. Full luggage details including weight and size restrictions are in there:

"Guests are encouraged to limit their checked luggage to two suitcases per person, with each suitcase not to weigh more that 50 pounds and not exceed 16"h x 24"w x 30"length. Please attach your Carnival Cruise Lines luggage tags PRIOR to leaving home and make sure that they are still on your bags when checking in with us. In many ports, guests have the option of carrying luggage on board at embarkation and off the ship at the end of the cruise as long as it does not exceed 24"w x 16"h. This is an advantage you may want to consider as it will allow for quicker easier access to your bags."

CARRY-ONS: As far as the carry-on, there are no specific restrictions on carry-ons but obviously they're assuming you are not carrying on anything larger than the regular luggage size restriction. it's not a good idea to check in 2 big bags and then also have a gigantic 3rd bag. Keep in mind that here is a very limited amount of room in your stateroom to put that luggage for the week, so it's best if it can all be unpacked and then fit under your bed and be totally out of your way. Most people stick with a purse and a tote bag or backpack or other small roll-aboard as their carry-on. Since we have a late dinner seating (8pm) it is fairly likely that everyone will see their luggage before dinner. Just in case, make sure you have something in your carry-on that is not shorts or tank tops (=not allowed in the dining room) and maybe a sweater or something for the air conditioning.

GRATUITIES: Please also see the link on the same list to "Gratuities" (= Tips). How it works on all cruise ships is they will automatically charge your Sail & Sign Account in advance for $10/day at the beginning of the cruise (right when you get on). There is a full explanation of where that number comes from in the Frequently Asked Questions area. You have the option of disputing your gratuities at the end of the cruise if some reason you feel your service was terrible. Please keep in mind that these gratuities are actually the service crew's salaries (all the cabin stewards and all dining room personnel are paid from your tips) and they take the quality of service and the gratuities very seriously because of this.

DINING ROOM SEATING: The FIRST NIGHT, everyone will sit at your assigned tables noted on your tickets. If you love your table, excellent! If you hate your table, you will have the opportunity to change it the next night, so please be patient and just enjoy your dinner. We CANNOT make any changes on that first night! We will check with everyone on that first night to see if you want to stay or change. If you have requested special tables in advanced, that's where you were assigned. Then starting on the SECOND night, we will have some "RESERVED" tables and some "OPEN" tables. For the rest of the week, the people who have asked for specific people at their table or were happy with their first night spots will sit at the same exact "RESERVED" table every single night all week long, and everyone else is free to choose any "OPEN ZYDECO" table. It's not as complicated as it sounds. The main thing to remember is that it is really important to be ready to enter our dining room at 8pm SHARP. Being late messes up the entire dinner service and creates chaos for the cruise line. If you do not want to attend dinner in the dining room or you do not want to get there at 8pm, there are plenty of other more casual food options on board.

WE SAIL 2 HOURS LATE!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - WE SAIL 2 HOURS LATE!:
10/24/08: Carnival has let us know today that our departure schedule from
Galveston on 11/2 has shifted by about 2 hours. Passengers will be able to start boarding the ship starting at about 2pm, and we will sail at 6pm instead of at 4pm.

NAME BADGES: Due to an oversight on our part, we did not send out about 50 of your name badges and we are really sorry about this! Anyone who has requested corrections or if you have not yet received your badge, please see us on the ship. We will have the badges at the information table for an hour or two when you get on the ship (Lido Deck by the Atrium) where you can also pick up your daily Zydeco/Cajun schedule and read our announcement board, and we will also be stationed by the entrance to the dances with badges. PLEASE BRING us your old/incorrect badge in order to pick up your corrected badge - thanks. You will need to wear your badge for entrance into all of the dances and classes. This is the only way we can check to see if you are part of our group or not. We know some of you do not like this, but please help us out here -- play along and bring your badge and wear it.

SCHEDULE: Dance/performance and class schedule will be posted this weekend - thank you for your patience! If you came with us last year, it's the SAME basic schedule but with some new and different dance classes thanks to the hard work of Marla Meyer and our fabulous instructors. The first day when we get on the ship, Geno plays (Steve plays the next day). There is a morning orientation/intro and dance and crafts classes starting on Monday.

Thanks,
Carol

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME IS ALMOST OVER

THE TIME CHANGES ON NOVEMBER 2nd at 2am

******THIS IS RIGHT BEFORE WE SAIL******

You will set your clocks BACK one hour on November 2 in the very early a.m.

If you think you might forget about the time change, you might write yourself a reminder note right now, or ask someone to remind you the night before!

The common mistake in the fall is to forget about this and get somewhere one hour early -- not the end of the world, but wouldn't you rather have one more hour of sleep instead?

CARNIVAL CHANGES BACK TO GALVESTON DEPARTURE

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!

We found out TODAY from Carnival that we are now sailing out of GALVESTON as originally planned.

Please help us out by spreading the word on this very important detail to anyone who may not be checking the Zydeco Cruise Website regularly. There is not time for us to send everyone a letter. The Travel Machine will be contacting everyone to let them know about this change as well.

If you have made a hotel reservation in Houston and you want to get a different hotel reservation in Galveston, please contact your Travel Machine agent directly for more info -- they are working right now on identifying hotel room blocks for us.

We are extremely sorry for the confusion. Big hurricane years are always more complicated than other years, and we appreciate your continued patience.

Carol

TICKET MAILING

Tickets are being mailed out this week from the Travel Machine’s office in Lafayette, LA, via regular US mail.

IMPORTANT! Contact your agent at the Travel Machine directly if you do NOT receive your tickets in the mail by Tuesday, October 21, 08.

Your tickets will say “Galveston” and we are going out of the Port of Houston’s Bayport Terminal. This is fine and do NOT worry! They will take your tickets in Houston. See
www.portofhouston.com

Please read the 2-sided letter in your ticket packet with the rope/anchor design around it, or read the same letter posted on this website called FAQ (
Frequently Asked Questions).

Please also read the Carnival info in the packet since most of the questions we get asked are clearly answered in the Carnival brochure or in the FAQ’s letter – thanks! We are happy to answer any and all questions for you, but please take a look at the detailed information first.

There is a LOT of info in the ticket packet and it’s important stuff that you need to know now, rather than after you leave home.

There are detailed directions in the FAQ letter on how to go online and pre-register for the cruise, which will definitely save you some time when you get to the cruise terminal.

Please check your name badges ASAP for mistakes, and email Carol directly at zydecocruise@aol.com with NAME BADGE in the subject line if you need something changed on their badge.

Please include very clear directions on what needs to change AND include your first and last name and city and state as well in the same email since we will make a whole new badge for you. You will need to pick up any new corrected badges on the ship.
Bring your old (WRONG) badge with you on the cruise so we can collect it and give you your new badge instead.

Note: Carol will be traveling next week and would really appreciate questions or name badge corrections via email rather than phone calls if possible. If anyone needs to call because of no computer access, then that is totally, fine (of course!), but email is definitely preferable. Thanks for your understanding!

Thank you!
Carol

EZ CRUISE CONNECTION (SHUTTLE) NOTICE

We at EZ Cruise Connection appreciate your business as well as your patience as we adapt to the conditions bestowed upon us due to Hurricane Ike. We are aware of the changes made by the cruise lines and are now taking passengers to the Houston Bayport Cruise Terminal Located at: 4700 Cruise Road, Pasadena, Texas 77586. Being that the change in distance is not very significant, there will not be a price change. The only change EZ Cruise Connection is currently implementing is taking passengers to the Houston Bayport Cruise Terminal instead of the Galveston Cruise Terminal. BAYPORT CRUISE TERMINAL, HOUSTON, TX

NEWSFLASH 9/17/08

CONFIRMED: We will definitely be sailing from Houston's beautiful new Bayport Cruise Terminal instead of from Galveston.

What this means to you:

The Cruise: Same ship, same cruise itinerary! No changes.

Getting there: Great news -- The new terminal is closer to the major airports. This will be easier and faster.

Arrival Time on 11/9: Arriving back in Houston one hour later at 9am instead of 8am.

Shuttle from airport to ship: You will need to call and make reservations yourself, or make sure to call and change your reservation over to the Houston Bayport Cruise Terminal if you've already made one for the Galveston Cruise Terminal. The same shuttle company we previously posted can take you to the Bayport Cruise Terminal. This info is also on your Travel Machine invoice.
www.ezcruiseconnection.com 1-877-316-5165.

Hotel: If you have a hotel reservation in Galveston, cancel it. There should not be any problem getting hotels in Houston since there are lots of rooms in many price ranges available that are conveniently located. We just found out about this port change and we are looking for hotel room blocks at good prices. Give the Travel Machine a few days to work on this, and then please contact them directly if you need hotel booking help.

Thanks for your patience, everyone!

GALVESTON UPDATE, SEPTEMBER 16, 2008

Hurricane Ike Galveston impact update 9/16/08: Please see today’s announcement from Carnival that they will be moving previously scheduled Galveston sailings over to the Port of Houston’s Bayport Cruise Terminal temporarily. Note that this DOES NOT MEAN that our sailing will definitely be moving to Houston – yet. They are still assessing damage to the Galveston Terminal before making any announcements that are any farther reaching than the next week or so. We will let you know the minute we learn anything new. Please keep in mind that it can all change – this situation is still very new, and Carnival is doing the best they can on this. Again, always keep on checking this Announcements Page for the latest information.

GALVESTON UPDATE

We are closely monitoring the situation in Galveston and the impact from Hurricane Ike. We have now made plans to operate from the new cruise terminal in downtown Houston (the Bayport Cruise Terminal) until the pier and cruise terminal in Galveston are available to us. This will be effective with the Carnival Ecstasy cruises starting on September 20, 2008 and the Carnival Conquest cruises starting on September 21, 2008. The address for Houston’s Bayport Cruise Terminal is 4700 Cruise Road, Pasadena, Texas 77586.

In addition, here are the current plans for guests aboard the Carnival Conquest September 7 and the Carnival Ecstasy September 11 cruises:

Carnival Conquest September 7, 2008 Departure

The Carnival Conquest cruise that departed on September 7 returned to New Orleans on Monday, September 15. Guests were able to debark on Monday and today. Guests will also be able to remain onboard and sail to Houston with the ship. The ship will depart for Houston (the Bayport Cruise Terminal) today at 11:30 AM with arrival in Houston scheduled for Thursday, September 18 at approximately 12:00 noon. All guests will debark at that time.

Carnival Ecstasy September 11, 2008 Departure

The Carnival Ecstasy cruise that departed on September 11, 2008 will return to New Orleans today (1:00 PM arrival). Guests will be able to debark today or Wednesday. Guests will also be able to remain onboard and sail to Houston with the ship. The ship will depart for Houston (the Bayport Cruise Terminal) on Wednesday, September 17 at 11:30 AM with arrival in Houston scheduled for Friday, September 19 at approximately 12:00 noon. All guests will debark at that time.

We sincerely apologize to our guests that were impacted by these modified cruises. Most importantly, we hope that all of those that reside in the areas impacted by Hurricane Ike were able to remain safe. We also wish a speedy recovery to those that may have sustained damage homes or businesses.

POST-HURRICANE IKE ANNOUNCEMENT

Thanks to all our Zydeco and Cajun cruisers in Texas and in Louisiana who have checked in to let us know you made it through Hurricanes Gustav & Ike in one piece. To our many friends in the Houston and Galveston areas, our thoughts are with you this week and we hope that you and your families are safe.

We will post new information here about the Galveston Cruise Terminal and about our sailing on 11/2/08 as soon as updates are available.
(In the meantime, just a reminder: Don't forget to get yourself an Absentee Ballot so you can vote before you leave on your cruise!)

We would like to ask for your help for the next week or so -- and the very best way you can help us in the next few days is to
NOT call or email The Travel Machine offices and ask them for info about the Zydeco Cruise. (Obviously, if you have something urgent going on, they are there for you, so please go ahead and contact them).

They service thousands of loyal customers (
Not just us - hard to believe!) and they have customers stranded all kinds of places at the moment and are dealing with cruise cancellations and all sort of phone calls and emails.

Many of the Travel Machine employees were just getting back into their own homes after the Hurricane Gustav evacuation when Hurricane Ike came through.

Let's try to give the Travel Machine as much space as possible this week to take care of their customers with super-urgent needs first. Thank you! We appreciate your patience on this, and we promise to do our absolute very best to keep this info up to date when we know anything definite.

Our sailing is still 7 weeks away. The major lines have vast experience changing their plans around quickly and efficiently when major hurricanes damage the cruise terminals, which happens at some point in some cruise port location or other almost every single year. There is no doubt that by the time November comes around, Carnival will have restored all ships to normal service schedules with as few changes as possible.

If our sailing or our port of departure changes for any reason, we will let you know the instant we know something. We realize that many of you are coming from far away and we also realize that many of you have non-refundable plane tickets. Keep in mind that right now we have absolutely no information and we cannot say at this time if anything will be changing or not.

The best advice we have for everyone is............WAIT. Please wait a few days, see what happens, and check back here for news. If you have questions not being answered here, please call Carol at 206-295-6839 or email Carol at zydecocruise@aol.com

As many of you have already seen, Carnival Cruise Lines has posted a general announcement on the Galveston situation:
http://www.carnival.com/cms/fun/cruise_control/Weather_Updates08.aspx

We have gotten several very excited emails today from people who noted the change in this week's Carnival Conquest schedule from Galveston to New Orleans.
Don't get excited yet! This temporary move from one port to another for a week or two is not all that unusual after a major hurricane, and this does NOT automatically mean that our sailing will move to New Orleans.

Again - we will update you when we are informed of the status or any changes from Carnival. They are still assessing the damages to the cruise terminal in Galveston, and it is not likely that there will be any news for several days on this.

Here is the full text of Carnival's announcement from today:

TROPICAL WEATHER UPDATE
SEPTEMBER 14, 2008 – 6:00 PM

We are closely monitoring the situation in Galveston and the impact from Hurricane Ike. We do not currently have a lot of information about the status of the shipping channel, cruise terminal or the port access infrastructure. Local communication has been very challenging and there are restrictions against incoming traffic into the Galveston area.

We do not expect the Port of Galveston to be open on Monday and there is tremendous uncertainty about when the port will be available to us next week. Due to this situation, we will now cancel the following cruises:

Carnival Conquest September 14, 2008 departure that was re-scheduled to a 6 day cruise departing on Monday, September 15.

Carnival Ecstasy September 15, 2008 departure
Guests will receive a full refund of cruise fare and we will process these refunds within three weeks.

• Carnival Conquest September 7, 2008 Departure

The Carnival Conquest cruise that departed on September 7 will return to New Orleans on Monday, September 15. Guests will be able to debark on Monday or Tuesday. Guests will also be able to remain onboard and sail back to Galveston with the ship. However, we are uncertain about when the Port of Galveston will re-open.

• Carnival Ecstasy September 11, 2008 Departure

The Carnival Ecstasy cruise that departed on September 11, 2008 will return to New Orleans on Tuesday, September 16 (2:00 PM arrival). Guests will be able to debark on Tuesday or Wednesday. Guests will also be able to remain onboard and sail back to Galveston with the ship. However, we are uncertain about when the Port of Galveston will re-open.

We sincerely apologize to our guests that are impacted by these canceled or modified cruises. Most importantly, we hope that all of those that reside in the areas impacted by Hurricane Ike were able to remain safe. We also wish a speedy recovery to those that may have sustained damage to homes or businesses.

Thanks,

Carol

T-SHIRT REMINDER

T-Shirt order deadline is 10/1/08 at midnight for us to RECEIVE your order form AND payment in Seattle – please plan ahead. Due to Hurricane Gustav, the t-shirt order form mailing which was supposed to go out in the US Mail on 9/1 is just now going out on 9/8.

If you do not receive a form by 9/15 in the regular mail, this probably means we didn’t have your address and/or we didn’t send you one for some other odd reason.

All of the t-shirt ordering info is available here online, so you aren’t missing anything. We mail them out to everyone just in case someone does not have a computer or they are not checking www.zydecocruise.com for these announcements. This mailing delay means everyone will have one week less than we had hoped to order their shirts and send payment, and we apologize.

***Please email Carol at zydecocruise@aol.com sooner rather than later if you have any questions or problems on the shirts. We really will have to cut t-shirt orders off on 10/1 in order to get the shirts done and shipped to Galveston before the cruise sailing date. Thanks!
