Who's Who (A Guide to Cruise Ship Personnel)
Captain: The big boss; may also be referred to as The
Master (of the Ship).
Staff Captain: The second in command; usually in
charge of navigation and safety.
Hotel Manager: In charge of passenger services,
including restaurants, bars, and accommodations. (If you need someone to complain to in these areas, the buck stops
here.)
Chief Engineer: In charge of all the onboard machinery,
including the engines.
Purser: In charge of information and financial matters
(this is where your bill comes from at the end of the cruise).
Chief Steward: In charge of making sure all cabins
and public rooms are cleaned and maintained.
Cruise Director: In charge of all activities and
entertainment; also gets to act as the ship's effervescent emcee.
Doctor: In charge of medical care.
Entertainment Director: Heads the show team.
Head Chef or Chef de Cuisine: In charge of the kitchen
(galley) and the menus.
Shore Excursion Director: In charge of land tours;
often doubles as the port lecturer.
Maitre d': In charge of the dining room operation.
Cabin Stewards: The people who clean the cabins.
Dining Stewards: A fancy name for waiters.
