Hard work and determination all paid off when the Level 5 team captured the 1st place team title at the Level 5 Championships at Technique Gymnastics on November 22-23. Cal West fared 1st on vault, beam and floor. In addition, three of Cal West Level 5 Team athletes were appointed to the Level 5 State Team: Crystal Paz took First, Megan Powers took Third, and Kristen Buehler came a close Fourth. Half of the 6 came from Cal West gymnasts! Way to go Team!
Crystal Paz was the highest scorer of the entire meet with a 36.875 all-around score. In her session, she was 1st on vault (9.15) and floor (9.3), 3rd on beam (9.25), and received a 9.175 on bars. Kristen Buehler took the 2nd place all-around with her 36.25. She was 1st on beam with a super 9.45 and 2nd on floor with a 9.275.
Megan Powers also claimed a state championship, winning the 10B age group. Megan had a 1st place 9.4 on beam and 9.0 on vault, and a 9.175 on floor to get her 36.275 in the all-around. Rachel DeGuzman took home a silver medal on floor with a 9.2.
Stephanie Chan stood on the 2nd place podium in her age group with a 35.375. Stephanie had an awesome 1st place beam routine which was awarded a 9.55, and a 1st place floor score of 9.125, Megan McWilliams won vault in the 7-8 age group with an 8.675.
In the 10C group, Camille DeLeon achieved gold for vault with an 8.9, was 3rd on floor with a 9.025, and scored a 9.1 on bars for her 2nd place standing in the all-around with a 35.875. The 11 year-olds were awarded in 4 different groups. Allison D'Ambrosio was 3rd on beam (8.875) and floor (8.9) in the 11 B's. Kimberlee Hu was 3rd on vault (8.45) and floor (8.85) in the 11C competition. Briana Gonzales held gold on floor with a 9.0, silver on bars with a 9.25, and bronze on beam with an 8.475. She accomplished a 3rd place all-around at states. Other 11-year olds who qualified to states were Andrea Suarez and Tori Sanders.
Danielle McWilliams sported 2 silver medals on bars and beam after competing with the other 12 year-olds.
Also competing at states for the first time were Lilian Mangrobang ( 7-8 age group), Brooke Osborn (9A age group) and Camille Harris (10B age group)
