CORVALLIS, Ore. - Megan
Devencenzi and D'Anna Piro have announced their plans to
attend Oregon State and join the gymnastics team beginning
in the fall of 2004, coach Tanya Chaplin announced Thursday.
Devencenzi (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate HS) qualified
for next week's Junior Olympic national championships as a
result of her fifth-place all-around finish at the Region 1
Championships earlier this month.
She took sixth on vault and seventh on beam at the regional
meet as well. At the 2004 Northern California state meet,
she finished third on vault and took fifth in the all-around
and on floor. She placed third in the all-around and won
beam at the 2003 Nor Cal meet. At the 2002 Region 1
Championship, she was third on floor and sixth in the
all-around to qualify for the J.O. national meet.
"We're really excited about Megan coming to OSU. She had
several opportunities at other universities, but she decided
that Oregon State was where she really wanted to be,"
Chaplin said. "We're extremely pleased to have a
student-athlete of her caliber joining the team. She has
great desire and passion for the sport."

Claire Pierce
CORVALLIS, Ore. Pierce, who trains at Cal
West Gymnastics, tied for first on beam at the 2003 J.O. meet, and she
was third on bars and fifth in the all-around. She was ninth in the
all-around at J.O. nationals in 2002, and she won the all-around at the
2003 Northern California championships and the Region 1 championships.
"For the last two years, Claire has been one of the top Level 10
gymnasts in the country. We had a great experience working with her at
our summer camp, and we knew she'd be a great addition to our program,"
said Chaplin. "Her beautiful lines and steady performances will
certainly get the crowd's attention." - Tanya Chaplin

Robbyn
Banks
Robbyn
Banks attends Valley Christian High School. Her parents
launched her in gymnastics at the tender age of 18 months
when they enrolled her in a gymboree program. She took a
break but then began her career in earnest at the age of 6.
She began training at San Jose State University and then at
level 6 moved to Airborne Gymnastics. She had many
successful years at Airborne and then decided to make the
move to Cal West for her senior year.
She started the season strong in Utah by winning the floor
She then won our own Far West competition and also won the
High Tech Invitational hosted by Technique Gymnastics. She
recorded an unheard of 9.9 on the floor at the Ku'uippo
Classic in Aeia, HI. Then the championships began. At the
Level 9 State Championships, she placed third AA and was the
State floor champion with a 9.375. At the Regional
Championships, she again placed third AA and captured the
Regional Vault Championship as well as qualifying to the
Western Regional Champion-ships, the highest level of
competition for Level 9. As we watched her prepare for this
competition, we were amazed by her focus and intensity in
practice. It was evident that Robbyn was on a mission. Her
dedication and hard work paid off as she is our 2001 Western
Regional AA Champion as well as the Western Regional Beam
Champion and Western Regional Vault Champion.
Congratulations Robbyn on a stellar season.
Robbyn has also been an incredible student, shouldering a
rigorous academic schedule on top of gymnastics. She
received athletic scholarship offers from several California
State Universities, Arizona State University, the University
of Alabama and several other colleges. She has accepted an
academic scholarship to Spelman College in Atlanta, GA.
While Spelman does not have a gymnastics program, Robbyn
plans to remain active in the sport at a local gym working
out and possibly coaching. We wish you the best of luck in
your future endeavors Robbyn. |

Heidi White
College Bio:
Cal West’s Robert Shawler coached Heidi from 1995 to 2001.
She accepted a full-ride gymnastics scholarship to Boise
State University in 2001 and began contributing to the
line-up in her freshman year. She won the Western Gymnastics
Conference Title on the balance beam with a 9.925 her first
year. Heidi was named to the Western Gymnastics Conference
All-Conference Team and was selected Gymnast of the Meet at
the Conference Championship. In her sophomore year her two
best scores…..another 9.925 on beam and a 9.85 on floor
helped propel her team to the Conference Championship again,
which they won. That win took the Broncos to the Regional
Championship for the 16th year in a row.
Cal West Bio:
Heidi joined Cal West as a Level 8 in 1995 and was coached
by Robert Shawler. Her highlight her first year competing
for Cal West was winning her first meet. She promptly broke
her foot at the next competition and was out for most of the
season. She competed level 8 again the following year and
had a successful season. She moved to Level 9, where she
excelled. She was the Level 9 State All-Around champion, was
a member of the NorCal State team, won the beam at the Level
9 Regional Championships, had all four of her scores count
for the NorCal team and qualified and competed at the
Western Regional Championships in Texas where she finished
5th.
Heidi moved to Level 10 during her sophomore year in high
school after only one year as a Level 9. She represented Cal
West for three years in Level 10. She qualified and competed
at the Level 10 J. O. National Championship twice, and was
first alternate to Nationals once.
Her hard work over the years paid off as she was offered
scholarships to 6 different universities. She chose Boise
State University for their small class sizes, high athlete
graduation rate; tough but encouraging coaching staff, and
welcoming team members. It didn’t hurt that over 2,000 fans
have been known to attend home meets either.
