For Your Den

(You will be given a Camp Den Name at the Pre-Camp Meeting)

Leadership

You should have at least 2 adult leaders with the Cubs at all times. Leaders of all ages are reminded that supplies have been ordered with the Cub Scouts in mind.  Allowing leaders to participate in some stations may take time and attention away from the kids. Remember that we are here for the Cubs!

Den Flag

Each den should have a den flag for the first day of camp. It should reflect the spirit of the camp den's name. Flags can be designed to fit in the top of the doodle stick or to be carried separately. To encourage a sense of ownership and pride, we encourage the boys to help design and construct their den flag. Don't go overboard on the flag.

Doodles

Den doodles are a way of showing what each boy has accomplished during the week. You can make them out of fun foam or cardboard or whatever other material you'd like. Make one for each boy. Put his name on it. It would be wonderful if the boys got to make these themselves.

This year we will be handing out participating beads at each station. The doodles that you make should have a string hanging down to hold the beads. It can be suede string, gimp, or other sturdy string. To reduce the risk of beads falling off the end we suggest putting a safety pin at the end of the string.

We suggest making a band of fun foam about 3-4 1/2 inches by 12 inches (each sheet of fun foam will make 2-3), and attaching to that 5 strings, one for each day. You may want to reinforce the edges of the fun foam with duct tape. Have the boys put their names on these, and decorate them. Hang this with a string from the doodle pole eithe ron the short end or the long end, your choice. On Friday the boys can make a leg band out of this doodle at one of the stations. If you choose to make a different kind of doodle, the boys can still make the leg bands and transfer their doodle beads to them on Friday.

Nametags

EVERYONE (including adults and junior campers) must wear a nametag at all times. Nametags should be worn around the neck or above the waist, and should not be larger than 4"x 4". Nametags should include the person's name, camp den and pack number.

Temporary and replacement tags, as well as nametags for visitors, will be available at the camp directors table.

There are a wide variety of nametag possibilities. I have seen nametags printed and laminated, simple pinback plastic holders (from Office Depot), names and dens ironed on their t-shirts, necklaces with names on fun foam or on wooden circles, and more. Use your imagination.

Den Yell

Den yells are another way to show den pride. They give every boy a chance to participate at opening in the morning, and build den spirit and morale. They give the den a chance to work cooperatively to create the den yell.

Den yells should incorporate the dens camp name in them. We will do roll call at camp opening which will be an opportunity to use the den yell. You can also practice it while hiking around camp, it's a great way to liven up the trips from station to station. Your den should prepare a den yell either prior to camp or on the first day of camp. This is lots of fun for the boys, too!
