Berri-UQAM

Berri is the 2nd deepest station in the network and is the 2nd busiest.  This is where the metro’s inauguration took place.  Berri first hosted just the Green and Orange lines, but now also hosts the Yellow.  Montreal’s transportation board, the STM, also has offices in this huge station.  UQAM stands for Université du Québec à Montréal and is one of Montreal’s two major French universities (all major four universities in Montreal have a metro stop named after them).

Berri is always busy, but is equipped to handle the large amount of passengers.  There aren’t many places to sit on any platform, but during the busiest hours, having more seats probably wouldn’t do much anyway.  On September 2, 2001, at about 11:25 PM, someone set off a tear gas canister in the station. The station was immediately evacuated of its 300 passengers. Although the fumes sickened several people, nobody was badly injured.  I’m not a big fan of Berri, but it’s a very useful station.
