A long time ago, long before there were two-legged’s, Creator sent Coyote to Earth Mother to teach the other animals. But Coyote was very young and with a great power of knowledge given by Creator. First Coyote stole fire from the Grandfather,today we call it the Sun. Now Creator seeing what Coyote had done and that only two-legged’s could use fire in sent two-legged’s to live with Earth Mother.
Many, many years passed by Coyote and he saw much, how the two-legged’s use the fire and created their civilization, and controlled all other people. Of course with age Coyote realized that he gave his knowledge and power to the two-legged’s by stealing Grandfather’s fire and how he was looked upon as a thief in the night. This fall from grace made Coyote very sad and depressed for he saw his folly in the two-legged’s.
One day near the end of time Coyote saw this beautiful Christmas tree and he took it home to later decorate because he wanted to lift his spirits for he was alone in his heart even though their were many that loved him. Four, very, young two-legged’s came to see his tree and said, “I wish we could have such a beautiful tree as that for Christmas, but our parents can not afford such a nice tree.” The little two-legged’s went home still happy that Christmas was near and because they knew it would be a happy time.
Well, Old Coyote thought, I will decorate my tree and have the little two-legged’s come to my place so they can see a beautiful tree. So Coyote sat on a rock and thought about how he was going to decorate the tree, he sat there for days…but still he didn’t move. This is foolish thought the Coyote, I know what I will do I will take the tree to the little two-legged’s for it is a time not to be a Coyote. So Coyote took the tree to the mother of the two-legged’s. My den is warm enough grumped the Coyote.
Many days went by when the oldest of the little two-legged’s, a young boy, came to visit Coyote. The boy brought a small living pine tree, decorated with tiny lights, and decorations crocheted by the mother and ornaments made by the children, and gave it to Coyote. The children took their pennies, and their mother found the little tree on sale. They worked for days to decorate the little Christmas tree.
And that is how Coyote became Grandfather…
