Grandmother Coyote’s Birthday
A Karine Story (Age 8)
One day long ago, Little Coyote asked her mother, Isavah, when Grandmother’s birthday was?
Isavah answered, “It is on the Forth of July.”
Little Coyote said, “That is in two days.”
“Why, you are right,” answered Isavah.
“We better start making a present for Grandmother,” said Little Coyote.
“What shall we make,” asked Isavah?
“We will make a card and a cake.”
“What kind of card,” questioned Isavah?
“A card with a heart on it and signed by me,” laughed Little Coyote. One that says, “Best of Wishes.”
“Mother! What kind of cake does Grandmother like,” asked Little Coyote?
“She likes pineapple upside-down cake,” suggested Isavah.
So Little Coyote made a card and her mother, Isavah baked a cake.
Two days later, they took the card and cake to Grandmother Coyote.
Grandmother was very happy. She said, “I cannot eat all this cake by myself.”
So they stayed with Grandmother.
The End…
Note: The late Grandmother Yazzi, a 92 year old, Navajo [Dine'] lady adopted Karine into her clan and accepted Karine as a friend. Grandmother is of the Ma'iideeshgiizhinii Clan [ Coyote Clan of the Jemez Pass People]. Karine is very honored that she has this valued friend. What is interesting is that Karine adopted Is-a-vah' a coyote for her stories many years before she met Grandmother Yazzie; is this just a coincidence?
