Pinwheels

Players:          12 or more; Level 2 and up

Where:            Inside in a gym or outdoors

Equipment:     None

Assistants:      Announcer

Object:

Groups ride in various patterns, changing at the direction of the Announcer.

Play:

Play begins with one rider as the leader. All other riders line up single file behind the leader and begin riding.

The Announcer calls out 2, 3, or 4, and riders break off from the line, starting with the leader, to form groups of two, three, or four. They ride in a small circle, each extending their right hand into the center of the circle, to form a pinwheel, and ride forward, clockwise in a circle. The Announcer then calls out “Reverse,” and they switch directions and put their left hand into the circle.

The Announcer then calls out one rider’s name. All riders line up single file behind that rider as quickly and smoothly as possible without dismounting. That rider leads the group in a zigzag pattern around the riding area without cutting through the line.

The Announcer continues the pattern, calling out a number—2, 3, or 4. Each time, the appropriate number of riders breaks off into smaller groups, starting with the leader, and begins to pinwheel. They reverse directions when the Announcer gives the Reverse command. Riders at the end of the line will form a group with however many riders remain, even if it isn’t the number that was announced.

Level Adjustments:

None.  Groups or individuals may try to incorporate other riding skills, such as one-footing, during the game but they should try to stay mounted throughout.
