Players: 6 or more; Level 1 and up
Where: Indoors
in a gym or outdoors
Equipment: None
Object:
To ride in a large circle and idle at a signal.
Play:
Choose one player to be the Traffic Cop. The Cop stands (or idles) in the middle of the circle while all players ride forward clockwise. Riders may ride forward one-footing or wheel walking, but must try to stay mounted.
The Traffic Cop calls out “red light,” and all riders immediately stop and idle, according to the Level Adjustments below.
Level 1 and Level 2 riders may grab hands with a partner to idle or may use a wall or other support.
Anyone who dismounts is eliminated from that round.
When the Traffic Cop calls out “green light,” riders move forward again in a circle.
The Traffic Cop should call out commands quickly to keep the game moving and to give players lots of practice with idling.
Level Adjustments:
Levels 1, 2 Idle with support
Level 3 Idle alone
Level 4 Idle, weaker foot
Level 5 One-foot idle
Level 6 One-foot idle, weaker foot
Level 7 One-foot idle, eyes closed
Level 8 One-foot idle, weaker foot, eyes closed
Levels 9, 10 Crank idle
Variation:
If there are many beginning riders, the Traffic Cop could also call out “yellow light” a few seconds before calling out “red light” as a signal for beginning riders to pair up so they can idle with support.
The Traffic Cop may decide to play with an added rule: anyone who dismounts during either a red or green light is eliminated.
