Unicycle Central Distance Rides

Minnesota Unicycle Rides

General Information

Distance riding on a unicycle is challenging and lots of fun. You should be able to ride fairly well on your own before joining a group ride, unless you have someone along who is willing to help you. Riders often walk part of the distance, especially up and down steep hills or whenever they want a break.

Bring your own unicycle, or make arrangements to borrow one before the ride.

Walkers and bike riders are welcome to join our group.

Rides may include from 0 to 25 or more participants. The rides are casual and fun.

Rides vary in distance, from 1 mile to 20+ miles, and each participant decides how far he or she wants to ride. The group usually breaks up into several smaller groups to accommodate the various speeds of the riders.

Most riders use a wheel that's at least 24 inches. Smaller wheels are okay, but you may not be able to keep up with any of the other groups. Coker riders (36-inch wheels) usually ride a much longer distance.

There is no fee to join these rides. If we go on an organized ride with a fee, we'll let you know in advance.

We get many, many comments when we ride. Almost all the comments are positive. People enjoy seeing us, because we're not the usual sight and they realize that unicycling involves lots of practice and skill. Always be pleasant and present unicycling in a positive light, no matter what the comments are.

Other Guidelines

Check your tire before you leave home. Sometimes a pump is available at the start of the ride, but it's not guaranteed.

Bring along water, snacks, and some spending money, especially for longer rides.

Dressing in layers is a good idea. Wear padded bike shorts (usually underneath other shorts or slacks) and avoid jeans (the seams are very uncomfortable). Make sure your shoes don't have long, loose laces that will get tangled and pull you off.

Ride at your own risk.

Some riders use a helmet and wristguards. Safety equipment is always a good idea.

Unicyclists are generally slower than bikes. Please stay to the side to allow bikes to pass easily, and also warn pedestrians as you approach.

All rides are subject to cancellation, even at the last minute. Please decide if you feel comfortable riding under the current weather conditions. Feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Join us!  It's great exercise and lots of fun, and we enjoy having new riders of all ages in the group.
