"Guess who is probably coming to play here at The Living Room?" asked Susan Osborn. "Just guess WHO?" Paul Winter? George Winston?
"No. TUCK AND PATTI ! ! ! ! Ahhhhhh!!!!"
We both screamed like starstruck teenie boppers and jumped up and down. (Actually, we were talking on the phone, so I don't know if Susan jumped or not.) Word spread quickly and when tickets went on sale, they went FAST! I didn't have to do much promotion for those two, and actually posted more posters about their two shows being sold out. This guitar/vocal duo on the Windham Hill label (they've just started their own label for their future releases) has been singing together 23 years, married for 20. They are impeccable performers, soul driven, "love warriors."
They arrived on Orcas after a grueling tour to Asia, Florida, back to Asia, and then four nights (two shows a night) at Seattle's Jazz Alley. They gifted us two deliriously superb shows in which I marvelled at Patti's gutsy vocals, Tuck's virtuosity (I was sure his dextrous fingers extended to his elbow, but his hands are not large at all...HOW DOES HE DO IT??)*...and their seemingly endless rapport.
At dinner after the first performance, I started tossing questions to the pair about this insane ice skating TV special they appeared in, shot outdoors at a Finnish ice castle on the night of the Winter Solstice. Their answers were so perceptive and entertaining, I asked if they'd like an interview if I could get my New Age Voice editor to agree. Sure. He did. So we did, with Susan Osborn sitting in as sound engineer. Occasionally I'd elbow her for a comment and she chimed in. Revealing, gutsy, and funny, the interview will run in September, 2001. Susan and Patti, by the way, are like soul sisters of song. Susan dropped a lot of hints that they should move here. I jumped up and down a lot.
I had three shots left in my camera and clicked these charming photos. Patti is the real composer, lyricist, and producer of the team (see Tuck nod), and is quite eloquent indeed. But when it came time for photos, she just melted into her sweetie.
I also took some digital photos of the second performance using Susan's TINY camera. I love being able to see the shots right away, but I'm kinda partial to a viewfinder and being able to control depth of field.
