Ferry Photos * Kids on the FerrySing-along in the Park with Mary Meyer

Mary Meyer led a rousing sing-along in Eastsound Square at the weekly sunset concerts on Sundays. Lots of photo opps, but there is always a yellow cast to these photos because of the setting sun. I try to color balance in PhotoShop, but there's just so much one can do. I love this lens flare, above, for it emphasizes her enthusiasm.

Leslie Seaman organized (and funded) all the concerts. She was shy about collecting money for the "free" concerts, so I went around with a plastic bucket and humorously browbeat folks into contributing. (My job was made easier when I found out she paid for the porta-potties herself. I have no qualms about making a fool of myself!) Other things about Leslie: She helped create The Fun House, our local art center and science exploratorium. She organized and funded the Sing for Joy evenings at the Living Room, and then she took the reins of ailing Grange organization, rebuilt its membership...and now the major rennovations of the old building (a project I spent years on). Sometimes I come home to a message on my machine, her voice telling me how great I am and how much she appreciates me. Excuse me? The editor of the Islands Sounder got it right and named her one of the key people who made a difference in the year 2000 on Orcas Island. By the way, she's just a working mother, not a rich benefactor. By the way, she's a cancer survivor and credits macrobiotics with turning around her health. Aren't people WONDERFUL?![]()
Above, storyteller Valerie Moriarty made the folks laugh with her stories about Alaska.![]()
People really got in to the singing! Mary's song sheet collection contained numbered songs and after awhile the crowd got rowdy calling out songs to sing. Below, the crowd in a more well-behaved moment.![]()

Mics were set up for brave soloists. Center is Verna Pehl, a stately lady who will sing at the drop of a hat. Leslie first found her singing at the meat department at Island Market. She and her husband have an antique car, which they drive in local parades, topped by a singing Verna. Joining her are Frank Michaels, who appears in almost every local musical, and Verna's daughter, visiting from off-island.
