What is a FLUTE
CHOIR?...
A Flute Choir consists of five or more flute players. The flute is a member of a
larger group in the Symphony Orchestra, called the Woodwind Section. The Flute
is actually the oldest instrument of the woodwinds. The Flute was originally
made of wood. Today, the modern flute is made of different metals: nickel,
silver, and even gold & platinum. Other members of the flute family are the
piccolo, the alto flute and the bass flute. The piccolo is the smallest, and it has the highest
& the most powerful sound. The piccolo requires more air to play than the flute
or even a brass instrument such as a tuba! The alto and bass flute are much larger and
lower in pitch. The piccolo adds a bright sparkle and the alto and bass flute add a deep
richness to the flute choir sound.
Over twenty years
ago, I started providing a performance venue for my students by organizing my
own flute choir. Its name is derived from my initials “CCC”, which is also
appropriate since the flute register spans three “C” octaves of sound. In the
last several decades, Not only have I directed the choir, but I have been the
manager and the events organizer for our performances. I have also arranged
numerous pieces for the specific needs or requests of my students. My private
conducting studies were with Dr. Jay Decker, since retired, Director of the
Wichita Symphony Orchestra and Director of the Wichita State University
Orchestras.
My choir provides
various performing opportunities for my students several times each year. “The
CCC Flute Choir” has presented many local concerts, including performances such
