Winter Park and the Fraser Valley – Wide Open Spaces

In 1893, Katherine Lee Bates wrote the words to a poem which later became “America The Beautiful”. In the Fraser Valley and Grand County, the spacious skies and purple mountain majesties take on special meaning.  We invite you to visit this little piece of Colorado and see for yourself.

As you crest the summit of 11,400-foot Berthoud Pass and wind your way down US 40, the lush forests and fertile valleys of the Fraser Valley open before you.  This is the great outdoors you have dreamed about – no lines, no gates and no admission fees to 1,800 square miles of some of the most beautiful open range in the Colorado Rockies!

Winter Park, Mary Jane and Sol Vista offer more than 3100 acres of some of the best skiing Colorado has to offer.  Grand Lake Touring Center, Sol Vista Basin, Devils Thumb and Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic centers offer a combined 260km of groomed cross country trails.  A winter vacation might find you snowshoeing in the Arapahoe National Forest, mushing a team of Siberian Huskies or soaking in a mineral hot springs while icicles form on your hair!  It might mean shopping in one of the many boutiques and shops or listening to live music while sampling fine cuisine. Snowmobile tours, sleigh rides, snow tubing, a variety of winter festivals, a cracking fireplace and more might make you want to skip work and play hooky!

As Spring gives way to Summer, a funny thing happens in the Fraser Valley.  Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, clear blue skies and clean mountain air, your energy peaks! Colors are brighter and everything is suddenly and wonderfully fresh!  World renown as Mountain Bike Capital USA, there are 600 miles of tracks and trails for every skill level.  From the Hill Climb Kick-Off in early June, the Fat Tire Classic later that month and ending with the Kona 24 Hour Series in September, there is something going on every week.  Be it be hiking, biking, skating or just strolling, there is something here for everyone.  With only 15 short hours of daylight it is darn near impossible to fit all the boating, horseback riding, trail running, sailing, fly fishing, camping, golfing, stargazing and brew sipping adventures into one day.

Once you have sampled the beauty and adventure of Winter Park and the Fraser Valley in the Winter and Summer, you owe it to yourself to come back in the Autumn and see why we can’t wait for the leaves to change.  Wood smoke mixed with the smell of Aspen leaves.  Fish rising on the Colorado River.  Elk bugling in the valleys.  The crowds have all gone home.  Warm days greet the hikers and bikers and the crisp autumn nights are the perfect excuse to snuggle under the comforter and dream of the first snowfall.

Winter Park and the Fraser Valley is one of those rare spots that truly offer you year round outdoor adventure.
