Duties of the Fleet Measurer

The duties of the measurer are to measure the sails and equipment listed on the official Catalina 22 measurement certificate (www.catalina22.org/nsa/forms.htm). This is best accomplished by selecting a day or days that are convenient to the members of the fleet and measurer. Pick out a location where you can spread out the sails, such as a gym, or large room, or a level grassy area. Select a couple of fleet members to help. A fifty foot tape and a twenty-five ft. tape will make it easier.

Notify all the members that wish to have their equipment measured, to bring the following:

  1. all sails
  2. battens
  3. whisker pole

The sails should be spread out and held tight enough to remove loose wrinkles, but not stretched.

The genoa has an L.P. dimension, which is the maximum length of' an arc formed from the pivot point, at the outer edge of the clew cringle, to the point of tangent at the luff rope.

After each sail is measured, the measurer should sign his name and the date on the tack of the sail with indelible ink.

The boat, rigging and equipment that is not easily removed, but listed on the measurement certificate is best measured at the boat. There shouldn't be any difficulty checking the equipment on the boat. A scale will be needed for the engine and anchor. If the engine is four H.P. or more, but weighs less than 40 lbs., additional weight may be added as ballast to make up the difference. If the anchor assembly is less than 15 lbs., additional chain or weight may be added to make up the difference. If the mast is standing) two whisker poles may be taped together at their extended length with an overlap of approximately a foot. This will give 23 ft. of length. The tape measure end can be taped to one end of the pole and raised to the lower end of the upper mast band. A person standing off from the boat, can sight and align the tape measure with the upper band. The distance between the bands may then be measured.

Enter all listed actual measurements and initial those items that were checked OK as required equipment. Two copies should be filled out and signed and dated by the fleet measurer. They are then mailed to the chief measurer for his signature. The chief measurer will file one copy, and send the other back, to be returned to the boat owner. He will then have a valid proof of measurement.

If an individual purchases a new sail, he should have it measured A certificate of measurement should be filled out for that sail. It is necessary to fill out only the section pertinent to that sail. Two copies are needed and signed as described previously.
