February 2004

From the Afterguard
By Dale Mack

I'm standing in for our Fleet  Captain Don Bateson this month since Don has been pretty busy with more important matters and the Bateson family's move from Portland to Vancouver at the end of this month.

Boat Shows

I hope you had a chance to visit the various boat shows in January.  Despite the snow and ice storm that hit in the middle of the Portland Boat Show, our shared booth with the Columbia River All Catalina Association netted us several prospective members.

The trip north to the Seattle Boat Show and the Lake Union Boats Afloat Show continued to prove worthwhile.  I ran into several Catalina owners from our neck of the woods at the shows.  We had some rain Friday while inside at the indoor show, but enjoyed a rain free day on Saturday at the in the water show, with even the occasional break in the clouds.

Boat Show Survivors Party, February 21

Please plan to join your fellow Catalina enthusiasts for a pizza party at the Willamette Yacht Club, located at the east end of Tomahawk Bay Moorage on Hayden Island.  The party is being hosted by the Columbia River All Catalina Association and Catalina 22 owners are invited.  Please RSVP so we can have an accurate headcount for purchasing food.  Fleet 20 will pickup the cost associated with any Catalina 22 owners attending.  More details can be found later in the newsletter.

Fleet 20 Spring Meeting and First Annual Technical Workshop, March 20

Mark you calendars to attend the fleet's Spring meeting.  In addition to discussing the coming season's plans for cruising, racing, and socials, the fleet is going to host its first ever technical workshop.  Participates will have an opportunity to examine various upgrades, and see demonstrations ranging from mast raising and lowering to how to tune your rig.  Laura and I are happy to be the hosts for this event, and I hope you will consider coming.  The event is open to all Catalina 22 owners, and not just those who identify themselves as members of Fleet 20.  More details can be found later in the newsletter.

Fleet 20 Burgee Design Contest
By Dale Mack

Fleet 20 is going to hold a burgee design contest, so let your imagination run wild.  A few guidelines to keep in mind.  Try to keep your design to two or three colors.  Stay with the traditional dovetail or triangle.  The dimensions are 12" x 20".

I've included some examples to help get the creative juices flowing.  Burgees one and two are variants of the Columbia River All Catalina Association Burgee.  Option one simply replaces the "CR" of the CRACA burgee with a "22".

The contest winner will get a free burgee. Please bring your design to the Fleet 20 Spring Meeting, where we will select a winner. Good Luck!

Fleet 20 Membership
By Dale Mack

We exited 2003 with twenty-six Catalina 22 owners listed in the fleet roster.  During the off season a few boats have been sold as owners move up, and other ones are planned to be sold.  Some of the changes I'm aware of include:

  • Sheila & Tom Drews traded-in #14286 (my former new-style C22) on the purchase of a Hunter Legend 35.5.
  • Dennis & Sandy Thomas have purchased a Catalina 27, and as a result they have #14306 (their new-style C22) up for sell.
  • Alan & Edie Jones have decided to move up, so #14671 (a new-style C22) is up for sell.

Please join me in welcoming our newest members.

Paul & Wanda Lou Maier of Lake Oswego

Catalina 22 (swing keel), #????, Nora-7.  Paul is interested in both racing and cruising, and he is available to crew.  He's been a long time member of the Willamette Sailing Club, and expects to do much of his sailing on the Willamette River.

We had several Catalina families sign up to receive additional information on Fleet 20 and its activities after viewing the display at the Portland Boat Show.

Renewal notices and invitations to join Fleet 20 will be mailed out this month.

The Fleet 20 Membership Application is available online at  www.c22pdx.org/docs.  Simply print it off, fill it out, and sending it in along with $10 to the address listed on the application.

  • Tuning the rig
  • Double Ended Mainsheet
  • Jib downhaul
  • Mast Gates
  • Single line reefing
  • Replace bow eye with the U-bolt style version and replace backing block
  • Reinforcement forestay by tying the deck fitting to the bow eye with a turnbuckle

Cruising

Changes in Attitudes
By Dale Mack

The sun was out on Sunday as I peeled back part of the tarp and climbed up to checkout the boat.  Sitting there surrounded by the remnants of last year's racing campaign, it wasn't hard to think about getting the boat back into the water.

Our first official on the water fleet activity is April 17th.  The plan is to meet up at the West Marine parking lot swap meet at 7 am and hang around for a couple of hours checking out the gear.  Afterwards we'll hit Elmer's for breakfast, and then head down to the boats.  The plan is to sail about in the vicinity of buoy "14" and then raft-up for an hour or so in the afternoon before going back out to sail.  Possible raftup locations include Grandma's Cove, the wing dam at daymark "16" (near the airport), and downstream of the jetty on the Washington side between buoy "14" and daymark "16".

If your boat is not in the water by then, we'll get you on one of the other boats.

Thinking about Racing?
By Dale Mack

To qualify as a one design racing fleet locally and earn our own start, a minimum of three Catalina 22's need to register and show up for the races.  With racing starting in the second half of April, the months of February and March are a good time to think about whether you are going to race your boat, and whether you need help finding crew.

For those sitting on the fence as to whether to race their boat or not, I want to make you aware of some resources that can help you learn more about local racing.

Fleet 20 Technical Workshop, March 20.  In additional to demonstrating various Catalina 22 modifications for easier trailering, cruising, and racing, the workshop is also an opportunity to connect up with fellow C22 owners and ask questions about racing.

OCSA Race Management Clinic, March 24.  The Oregon Corinthian Sailing Association (OCSA) will be hosting its Race Management Clinic at the Portland Yacht Club.  This informative clinic is not just for race committees.  The clinic will focus on the planning and coordination involved in putting on a sailboat race.  As a racer, I find that attending helps dispel much of the mystery surrounding racing on the Columbia River,  particularly the starts and finishes.  I highly recommend this clinic.  Nothing reinforces your knowledge as a racer than learning how to put on a race.  More details will be available in the March newsletter.

SYSCO Race Clinic, April 1 - 2 (Thursday & Friday).  The Small Yacht Sailing Club of Oregon (SYSCO) will be hosting a two day Race Clinic for those wishing to learn more about racing on the Columbia River.  The first day is an indoor discussion of:

  • Race Preparation
  • Starting Procedures
  • Strategy & Tactics
  • Rules

The second day features an on the water session featuring several practice starts and a round-the-buoy practice race.  Experienced skippers will be available for onboard assistance.  More details will be available in the March newsletter.

OCSA Race Book Release Party
By Dale Mack

The party is an easy way to pay your $15 OSCA membership fee, and pick up your 2004 OCSA Race Booklet and OCSA Course Chart while hanging out will your fellow sailors at the Portland Yacht Yacht.  While OCSA membership is not a requirement to race your boat, I find the  Race Booklet a handy guide to all the major events planned for the sailing season.

The party is really like an open house with people coming and going throughout the run of the four hour event.  The party typically features  food, drinks, Race Books, Course charts, T-shirts, friends, rivals, skippers, and crew.

Who Is OCSA?

The Oregon Corinthian Sailing Association began in 1959 as a sailing event coordinating organization. OCSA is an independent non-profit organization whose Board is composed of representatives from the yacht clubs of Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington.

The purpose of OCSA is to encourage and promote sailing events with an emphasis on racing. OCSA works toward better community awareness of sailing, water safety, and appreciation of sailing as a sport. OCSA develops race management skills by providing instruction for race conduct and management. The planning of the Race Calendar, publishing of the Course Chart and OCSA Race Booklet are functions of OCSA. At the end of the year, OCSA hosts the annual Tropical Party and membership meeting open to members and non-members.

While its primary focus is on coordination of member yacht club activities, OCSA members are exposed to a variety of activities to suit their sailing interests. Members of OCSA receive the OCSA Race Booklet, OCSA Course Chart, Newsletters, special notices, and event invitations as a part of membership. Call any board member for information.

Technical Tips

Tarp Alternative
By Dale Mack

From crib boards and winches to handrails and cam cleats, there are lots of reasons to cover your boat from the elements.  While many of us make do with tarps, every once in awhile I come across a Catalina 22 with a handsomely made Sunbrella cover.

I was checking out the weekly floating boat show by The Sailing Life the other day when I came upon a new style Catalina 22 with new canvas.  The boat was berthed at McCuddy's on Hayden Island when I shot these photos in early February.

The cover makes use of the same snaps as used by the poptop cover.  I particularly liked the way the cover wrapped around the mast and used twisted fasteners to secure the seam.

One change I would make to the design is back at the companionway.  Instead of following the snap pattern with the canvas, I would have left the extra material and formed a diagonal line from the top outer corners of the cabin down to the lowest snap on the companionway trim.   This extra coverage would have protected the sides of the trim.  A picture of the alternative approach can be view by clicking here.

All in all, this is one of the best covers I've seen for a Catalina 22, short of the full boat cover.
