March 2004

From the Afterguard
By Dale Mack

Hello again.  Don and Carolyn are still digging through boxes unpacking, so I'm going to fill in for Fleet  Captain Don Bateson again this month.

Boat Show Survivors Party

The Boat Show Survivors Party, hosted by the Columbia River  All Catalina Association (CRACA) on February 21, turned out to be a lot of fun.  The event was held at the new Willamette Yacht Club facility on the water at Tomahawk Bay Moorage.  CRACA provided pizza,  dessert, non-alcoholic beverages along with plates, cups, napkins, utensils, etc.  Several attendees brought beer and wine to share with their fellow party goers.

The Willamette Yacht Club facility was very nice and well outfitted with everything to host a party.  CRACA is planning to use the WYC clubhouse for some of the activities associated with this year's Catalina Owners Rendezvous in September.

Laura and I were the only Catalina 22 owners in attendance, although several at the party had owned Catalina 22s prior to moving up.  We enjoyed ourselves retelling  past sailing adventures and listening to the descriptions of places we hope to someday visit.  The February Boat Show Survivors Party is becoming something of tradition with local Catalina Yacht owners, so expect to see it on the Fleet 20 calendar for 2005.

Fleet 20 Technical Workshop, March 20

I hope you are planning to attend the fleet's first ever Technical Workshop.  The idea for the workshop came about after reading an article in Mainsheet magazine (the magazine of the C22 National Sailing Association).

I'll have the tarp off of Crocus so we can examine and talk about some of its upgrades and flaws.  Flaws???  Yes, flaws, Crocus is a 1978 C22 that has passed through several owners.  Most of this year's projects are focused on safety and stopping leaks.  One of the side projects is simplifying and improving the efficiency of the running rigging on Crocus.  Participates will have an opportunity to examine various upgrades, and ask lots of questions

The event is open to all Catalina 22 owners, and not just those who identify themselves as members of Fleet 20.

What General Membership Meeting

Fleet 20 will join members of CRACA at the North Sails loft. Learning to Race
By Dale Mack

There are a pair of interesting clinics coming up for anyone thinking about racing or just wanting more information.  You don't need to me a member of OCSA or SYSCO to attend these clinics.

Race Management Clinic

Offered by:

Oregon Corinthian Sailing Association (OCSA)

March 24, 2004

Session starts at 18:00 hours (6:00 p.m.)

Portland Yacht Club
1241 N.E. Marine Drive
Portland, OR  97211

Topics will include:

Race Preparation
Starting Procedures
Signals
Course Selection
Rules
Finishing Procedures

This informative clinic is not just for race committees.  The clinic will focus on the planning and coordination involved in putting on a sailboat race.  This clinic can dispel much of the mystery surrounding racing on the Columbia River,  particularly the starts and finishes.  Nothing reinforces your knowledge as a racer than learning how to put on a race.

Technical Tips

Easing the Tension
By Dale Mack

In an upcoming issue, I'll be covering the installation of an adjustable split backstay.  The adjustable backstay allows you to bend the mast, which depowers the mainsail by flattening it and pulling the draft of the mainsail forward which results in reduced heeling and reduced weather helm. The split backstay also allows you to increase the forestay tension for improved performance windward, and decrease forestay tension of better performance off the wind.

Since many in the fleet either have or are contemplating adding an adjustable backstay, I just want to remind you to release the tension when the boat is sitting at the dock in order to relieve stress on the various elements that make up the standing rigging.
