August 2005

From the Captain
By Dale Mack, Crocus, #4248

My biggest sailing adventure in July involved racing my Catalina 30 in the week long Oregon Corinthian Sailing Association's Six Pac race downriver to Astoria, Oregon.  You can read about the trip which I captured for the CRACA newsletter by clicking here.  Combine that with my June participation as crew at the Catalina 30 National Regatta in Seattle (click here for the story), and you get a sense of the variety I've enjoyed sailing this summer not even counting all the times out on Crocus.  I hope you've been making time to get out on your boat even if only for a couple a hours a week.

Now that Catalina 22 racing is essentially done for the season, I've been getting my C22 "fix" by taking Crocus out single-handed.  The boat is definitely getting a Boomkicker next year.  I added this alternative to a topping lift on my last C22 and I really miss it.  Please don't hesitate to send along your questions if you're interested in learning to single-hand your boat.

As you can see below, there is still lots of Fleet 20 cruising opportunities ahead.

  • Beacon Rock  State Park (August 18-21).  This is a great destination and one of my favorite on the river.  The bonus is that the sail back can be absolutely wonderful.

  • Columbia River Catalina Rendezvous (Sept. 17-18) sponsored by the Columbia River All Catalina Association (CRACA) and open to all Catalina owners.  This is always a great event, and this year it is being held at Sand Island - Upper Dock, across for St. Helens, Oregon.  The destination makes for a great sail from Portland.

  • Sail for the Cure (Sept. 25, Sunday) sponsored by the Oregon Women's Sailing Association.  This is the perfect Catalina 22 event and a great way to share sailing with your friends and family.  More on this enjoyable day sail can be found below.

It has been great meeting many of you this season.  Crocus has had several C22's move in as neighbors, but I haven't managed to connect with anyone yet.  See you on the river.

Cruising

Beacon Rock Cruise
By Dale Mack

August 18 - 21.  We're off to Beacon Rock State Park, nestled amongst the slopes of the Columbia Gorge is  just downstream of the Bonneville Dam (the last dam on the Columbia River).  This is one of my favorite annual cruise destinations.

Part of the Washington State Park System, Beacon Rock features, wide docks, picnic and camping sits, BBQs, sandy beaches, a launch ramp, excellent restrooms with hot showers, and potable water.  New in 2005 is the addition of power on the dock floats, and a marine head pump out station.  One of the added benefits of Beacon Rock is that you can have family and friends meet you there by car.

Here's our itinerary:

Thursday
  • Destination - Guest docks at Parker's Landing, Washougal.
    • 3 hours upstream of the I-5 bridge
    • Fuel and guest berthing is available at the marina
  • Dinner - 6:30 pm at the Puffin Cafe.

Friday

  • Destination - Beacon Rock State Park Docks
    • 3.5 hours upstream of Parker's Landing
    • Plan getting to Beacon Rock in the early afternoon, because the late afternoon wind blowing East can sometimes generate a considerable swell.
  • Potluck Appetizers - 4:30 pm on the dock.

Saturday (Beacon Rock)

  • Hike to the top of Beacon Rock, Kayak the backwaters, etc.
  • Potluck Appetizers - 4:30 pm on the dock.

Sunday

  • Return to Portland (about 4 hours)

Notes on Beacon Rock:

  • Moorage at the dock $.50/foot per night.
  • Bring quarters for the showers (3 minutes for 50 cents).
  • Great place for dinghies, kayaks, or small sailboats.
  • Running water is available at the top of the ramp.
  • Ice is available about a mile's walk from the moorage.
  • There is a one knot current that runs south passed the docks.
  • Camp sites, boat ramp, and picnic area available.

  • The walk to Beacon Rock is very doable if you want to hike to the top.
