December 2006

From the Captain
By Dale Mack, Crocus, #8244

Happy Holidays to everyone.  I'm hoping that all the rain and cold weather translates into a good snow pack and nice river levels for the coming year.  While Crocus sits on its trailer under a tarp beside the house, Celtic Myst remains in the water year round, so I'm down to checkout the boat every couple of weeks.  Although the winter pace of the marina is a lot slower, there are still boats going out to sail.

The Portland Boat Show ushers in the start of the 2007 sailing season.  I've got to admit I've become hooked on the show and not because I need another $10 pair of sunglasses, or wish to examine the latest aluminum fishing sled.  For me the show is a chance to meet friends, make new ones, and dream about the sailing to come.  I always volunteer to staff the Catalina Owners Association booth just to meet folks and talk about boats.

See you at the boat show.

Portland Boat Show
By Dale Mack

January 6-14.  It's hard to believe that the Portland Boat Show begins its nine day run in less than a month.  For many the show kicks off the planning for the new sailing season in the Portland/Vancouver area.  Admission to the show is $8.00 (free to children 12 and under).

The Columbia River All Catalina Association (CRACA) will also have a booth at the show.  Photos and recruiting materials for Catalina 22 Fleet 20 and Catalina 25/250 Fleet 94 will also be incorporated into the booth.

Rendezvous for Breakfast and the Show

I'm planning to attend the boat show on Saturday the 6th, and would like to suggest a breakfast rendezvous for those interested.  We'll start the day off with a 9 a.m. breakfast at Elmers - Delta Park (9848 N Whitaker Rd Portland, OR 97217), followed by a visit to West Marine (looking for after Christmas sales), and then onto the boat show which opens at 11 a.m. (closes at 9 p.m.).

RSVP the breakfast rendezvous at:  celtic-myst@comcast.net or 360-260-4196

The RSVP is important because I may skip the breakfast if I think I'm the only one going.

Seattle Boat Show &
Lake Union Boats Afloat Show
By Dale Mack

January 25 - February 3.  The Seattle Boat Show and the Lake Union Boats Afloat Show run from January 25 - February 3.   If you're planning to be there on February 3rd, perhaps our paths will cross as Laura and I will be visiting both shows.  Be sure to visit the boat show websites for details on admission and discounts on tickets and parking.

The Seattle Boat Show is held in the Qwest Field Event Center across the street from Safeco Field.  What the Seattle Boat Show lacks in sailboats it makes up for in marine equipment booths.

To see sailboats, you will want to go to the Lake Union Boats Afloat Show.  A free shuttle bus  operates between the Seattle Boat Show and the Boats Afloat Show.

Are You Racing in 2007?
By Dale Mack

Are you planning to race your boat in 2007?  The first SYSCO Spring Series race is Thursday,  April 19th.

Fleet 20 will once again be racing with spinnakers.  You don't own a spinnaker?  Not everyone racing in 2006 did either and they still came out and had fun.

Not that you need one, but racing every Thursday evening is a great excuse to get out on the boat with family and friends.

Be sure to take advantage of the Fleet 20 Rigging Workshop in February.  We be covering everything from standing rigging to running rigging.  If your boat isn't rigged for a spinnaker (either cruising or racing) then you'll have an opportunity at the workshop to look at and discussion some of the options.

Evolving the Gin Pole
Catalina 22 Technical Tips
By Dick Reynolds, Catnip, #4570

Hi Dale,

I built your gin pole and have raised my mast four times now with no mess no fuss.  On your note about adding a piece of 2X4 on each side of the gin pole to prevent the slipping, I did that and it would still slip a little so I took another ratchet strap from the same attachment points as the first and angle one to round the mast on the up side of the gin pole and the other on the downside of the gin pole. It does not slip now.  I think I could even take the two short 2X4's off now but it would ruin the varnish.

I haven't built the bridle yet as I can control the sway just by holding the gin pole with one hand but I can't pause in route to straighten something out as always has to be done.  I have built my own deck organizers and the axle bolts for the pulleys are also the mounting bolts for the organizers. All I need to do is replace one of the mounting bolts on each side with an eyebolt and I have the anchor points for the bridle. Cool huh?
