The Kimball-Morel Organ

morel2.JPG

The Cathedral organ was built in 1912 by the W. W. Kimball Company in Chicago, one of the leading American organ manufacturers of that period. It had tubular-pneumatic action with 31 ranks on three manuals and pedal. In 1923 the original action was replaced by electro-pneumatic action. During the 1950s several minor tonal changes were made, and a new console had to be installed.

In 1994 a major restoration had become necessary and was made possible through the generosity of the late Monsignor Richard Hiester, former choirmaster of the Cathedral, with the help of the Colorado Historical Society, as well as the Knights of Columbus. Cathedral organist and former music director Allen Hobbs supervised the work which was done by the firm of Morel & Associates, Inc., Pipe Organ Builders in Denver, Colorado. The inaugural recital was played by Frédéric Desenclos from Paris on September 15, 1996.
