Boy Scout Troop 498

The Priest

November 17-19, 2006

Troop 498 climbed The Priest in Nelson County with full packs.  The scouts and leaders agreed that going down was a lot easier than going up!

It was a frigid Friday night at base camp on the Tye River.

Mr. McC's battery-powered Christmas lights lent a festive atmosphere to the camp.

Dawn revealed the famous Appalachian Trail suspension bridge over the Tye River.

The scouts prepared a hot breakfast before breaking camp and saying "goodbye" to Nelson County's river of doom.

The long ascent begins as Troop 498 pushes up the northern shoulder of The Priest.

A welcome water break at Cripple Creek early during the ascent.

A Cardinal District troop joined us at the creek - they climbed with day packs while their gear was driven to Crabtree Meadows. But the doughty scouts and leaders from St. Benedict scoffed at their burdens and enjoyed a spectacular vista on the eastern face of The Priest.

At the summit, Mr. McC. set up his trademark tarp. Scouts strike absurd poses around the fire circle.

Mr. M. achieved amazing things with the pots he carried to the summit. During the descent, the scouts gaze and gesture at the ominous summit of...

...The Priest!

The scouts look forward to their next backpacking adventure in April 2007.
