*******Bring knives to the meeting to sell, trade or show*******
Next meeting is next Monday,
June 27th
We hope to see you at the
Georgia Power Bldg. next Monday as we continue to discuss the new Annual Knife
Show (annual, we hope). We need everyone’s participation to make this a
success. But more on that later. Also, for those who haven’t paid your yearly
dues of $25 to Teresa Kennedy at the meeting or by sending to her, you are
almost out of time. And while those checkbooks are out, please consider that you
can STILL buy a 2004 Case Hunter Folder in Bone Stag with a Thumb Stud for
$65.00 each or, better yet, get a bargain at two for an even $100. Now that I
have my computer almost repaired, I will be dropping a line to those who are
still not recorded as paid to help remind them. I say my computer is almost
repaired as it has a new hard drive (but the wrong one) and a new internal fan
plus hours upon hours of my time. If you noticed that the top of the newsletter
has changed, it is simply I pinch hit to get this out. And it is still late for
which I apologize, but couldn’t write all by long hand.
Look forward to an interesting program presentation by Leroy Matthews who
moved his program up to accommodate H. S. and Sandra who decided to do some
vacationing in the area of their last Knife Show and won’t make the meeting.
It’s a good thing Teresa K. volunteered to bring the refreshments for this
meeting.

This and that from around
the Club...
A hearty round of applause
for Capt. Bruce Kinney for putting the CCC website together and getting us back
on the Web. You can access it by going to http://home.comcast.net/~ccconnet.
The email address is a little different – ccconnet@comcast.net.
Try it; you will like it. It was a pleasure to have Bob Huff back at the last
meeting after a long absence. Now, if we can just get a few more of our other
members that we haven’t seen in a while to drop by. There was good attendance
at the Blade Show, especially Friday and Saturday. A lot of Great Southern Knife
Show information was passed on and there seemed to be a lot of interest in it.
It was reported to the Club that Ben Hulsey is completely recovered and that was
great news. Now, we will await Ralph Martin get back on his pins after he
recovers from his second knee replacement. While in this area, Gary Kennedy has
agreed to TRY to pull off the Knife Auctions as smoothly as Ralph while he is
out recovering. Last month, Wayne Magness won the Case Mako Shark donated by Ben
Powell and Teresa Kennedy took home a beautiful Damascus Miniature given to the
Club by Jerry Bodner. Jan and Ed Giles are the proud new Grandparents of their
third Granddaughter, Brianna Martin, a 7 lb., 10 oz. lady born to daughter
Christine and her husband, Jim Martin in Alabama. All are doing well including
the Dad. There is money in the Treasury but you can help by buying your 2005
Club knife for $70 or two at $60 each. It is a great looking Queen Fishing Knife in the Original
Winterbone that just is not available any more. David C. tracked down the last
supply. You can see it on the Web site. I know that we will all look forward to H. S.’s presentation
on Randalls at the July program.

The Great Southern Knife
Show…
The planning for our first
Knife Show since 1986, jointly sponsored with the Flint River Knife Club and
with the support and help of the Georgia Custom Knifemaker’s Guild is well
under way as can be seen by the posters and handbills produced and being handed
out. The Vendor’s packets are ready and several were handed out at The Blade
Show where more than a few makers and vendors showed interest. Gary and Leroy
feel that they got commitments for 59 tables at the Pigeon Forge Show at the
quoted rate of $65 per table. It is now hoped that as many as 175 to 200 tables
will be at the show. But when I mentioned even 125 tables at the Blade Show,
people’s eyebrows went up as well as the interest level. Admission to the
event is set at $5 and the easiest directions I have seen is I-75 to Exit 263,
then east for approximately 3 miles to the Cobb Civic Center on the left. It is
not far from the Marietta Square.
All this information will be
on the web site soon. All members are urged to buy a table and just bring a few
knives to show or sell. It will support the first effort and be fun, too. David
Prowell, President of the Flint River Club, says all the rules have been set
after some discussion and they make sense. He wants both Clubs to make money so
as to have seed money for next year’s event. That means we have to gross over
$8,000 as that is the maximum budgeted. Leroy shared that our Club held its
first Knife Show in 1972 and continued each year until 1985. In 1986 we set up
in a joint show and discontinued shows after that year. Our planners have
started to create a list of the volunteer duties that will be required and we
will start filling those jobs shortly. There will be something for everyone
including the opportunity to distribute at least FIVE posters each to Sporting
Goods stores, Hardware stores, Barber Shops, Gun and Knife shops, Shoe and Pawn
shops, Bowling Alleys, Firing Ranges, Pool Halls and Pubs…any place where
people who might be interested in knives congregate.
The Georgia Custom
Knifemaker’s Guild believe they will contribute a high end Custom knife to
raffle to build a mailing list and will also set up a Hospitality Suite for the
Vendors.
Things are well on their way
but it all falls apart without your enthusiastic support. This is a chance to
feature our passion, our local hobby to the Knifing Public and thus open the
doors for new members.

Fighting counterfeiting of
old knives…
I am borrowing this from the
Central Ky.. Knife Club newsletter as it is germane and well done. It is
important to stop those preying on others. Educate yourself so you know. Make
sure all the parts match. Look to see that all metal parts appear to be of the
same age; tarnished backsprings with patina and new, mint blades just don’t
add up. Check to see that the tang and the back spring are the same width. Look
carefully to make sure one tang mark hasn’t been ground away so another one
can be stamped or etched. If the tang is smaller than the backsprings, chances
are this has been done. Or match the back spring and blades with a like pattern
knife if available. Make sure the pattern number and tang stamp match the knife
you are seeing. If the knife pattern number indicates bone handles, yet it has
genuine stag, step away. Ask around about a seller’s reputation from other
Club members, people at knife show and ask if there is a money back guarantee if
you find it has been misrepresented, intentionally or not. When in doubt, get a
second opinion from another well respected dealer.
