June '98 Volume 3.3

A Letter From The President

Can you believe the summer is almost half over? There is still plenty of golf to be played. We still have 4 tournaments before the CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP (see Upcoming Tournaments ). Remember you must play in at least 3 tournaments during the year to qualify for the BIG DANCE. Individual Match Play along with Team Match Play both count as a Tournament, so if you have played in both of these tournaments you only have to play in one more to qualify for the BIG DANCE.

Also next year will be here before we know it and we need your help. The Board is looking for some new blood, so anyone that has an interest please contact Tex Perry or Bill Leuschel ASAP.

The CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP DINNER will be held following Saturday’s Shot Gun. Please plan on bringing your significant other, we are going to have a great night.

As always keep hitting the ball straight and make sure to report all scores. Have a great summer.

2-Man Chapman Tournament - June 28

There have been a number of questions regarding the upcoming 2-Man Chapman tournament on the schedule for June 28.

A Chapman is a team event that tests each team member’s skill and (sometimes) your partner’s patience. It is a not too distant relative of the alternate shot format.

In a Chapman, each person hits his own tee shot on every hole. After hitting your tee shot, you proceed to where your partner’s tee shot landed and you play his ball and he plays your drive. After each second shot has been played, the two of you decide which of the second shots is the best and play alternate shots until the ball is holed.

Example: Player A drives straight down the fairway and player B slices into the rough. Player B then plays player A’s drive and Player A plays the shot in the rough. Player A advances out of the rough 50 yards, and Player B knocks A’s tee shot to the middle of the green. Of the two balls, the ball on the green is the most playable so the first putt is made by Player A, then B, etc. until the ball is in the hole.

It’s a fun format and guaranteed to promote some interesting discussion between partners. You can either pick your own partner and sign up as a team or sign up as an individual and be paired up. Team members handicaps must be within 8 strokes of one another or will be adjusted accordingly. The event will flighted based on 80% of your combined team handicap.

FREE GOLF !!!!!

As a member of CCMGA, you enjoy a wide range of golf competitions at the Coal Creek course during the prime weekend hours. We have 16 events scheduled this year and have had excellent turn out in the events so far this season.

You may not be aware of the work involved in setting up and running these events. This is the responsibility of each tournament chairman, which are voluntary positions assigned to the CCMGA Board of Directors.

They are responsible for insuring that players are properly paired (for team events), score cards and rules sheets printed and distributed, player sign in on tournament day, collect and log skins/close to pin money, audit score cards, post results, arbitrate disputes, pay out winners, etc. It's a lot of work and, hopefully, goes without notice to tournament participants.

But a tournament can’t run smoothly with only the board members. We need volunteers to help run these events. If you can assist either before, during or after a tournament, you will receive a certificate good for one free 18 hole green fee at Coal Creek for your assistance. Call any of the tournament chairmen listed in the tournament schedule to volunteer.
