May ‘97, Volume 2.2
Spring is in the air and all nature is shouting "Fore!", to loosely quote P.G. Wodehouse.
The 1997 CCMGA season is now in full swing, no pun intended. The weather cooperated for our first two early season tournaments. Both events had an excellent turnout and were quite successful. Congratulations to all the winners. However, our third tournament was met with some of the heaviest snowfall we've seen in years and had to be postponed (read on for more on the rescheduling of that event).
In this newsletter you will find important information on some of the upcoming tournaments, including the long-awaited announcement of the Match Play Championship. There is also an updated tournament schedule (there were a couple of typos on the original) and an updated list of 1997 officers (many of us have new phone numbers and email addresses, including me).
Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup tournament, also known by the appropriately Satanic name of 666, is a two-man event. The first six holes are best ball, the middle six holes are a scramble, and the final six are played as true alternate shot. This is a pick-your-own-partner event. However, partners must have handicaps within eight strokes of each other or the higher handicap player will have his handicap adjusted downward accordingly. If you don't have a partner, you may sign up as a single and the tournament committee will provide you with one. If you are signing up as a team, the greens fees for both players must be paid at the same time. What this means is that one partner must pay for both players. Be sure to tell the Coal Creek staff the name of your partner, if you have one, when you sign up. This event is scheduled for Sunday June 1st.
Two-Man Best Ball
This two-day tournament is scheduled for the weekend of June 21st and 22nd. It is also a two-man, pick-your-own-partner event, so the PYOP sign-up rules described above apply. Again, partners must have handicaps within eight strokes of each other.
Snowed Out Tournament Rescheduled for August 3rd
The Individual Stroke Play tournament originally scheduled for April 26th was snowed out and has been rescheduled for Sunday August 3rd (morning tee times). For those of you who originally signed up, you can apply the money toward an earlier tournament, re-sign up for the August 3rd tournament, or get a rain-check for a round of golf at the course. Please note that you are not automatically still entered in the August 3rd tournament!
March 17 was the first day that we began posting our scores for the 1997 Colorado golf season. All nine-hole and 18-hole scores from courses played should be entered using your GHIN or local number. If you were lucky enough to play some golf over the winter in states where they post scores all year, those scores should also be entered.
All scores entered should be adjusted using the ESC (equitable stroke control) adjustment. The following is a table so you can figure out the maximum score to post on a hole (regardless of par). Handicap refers to your course handicap, not your index.
| Course Handicap |
Max allowable score |
|---|---|
| 0 to 9 | 6 |
| 10 to 19 | 7 |
| 20 to 29 | 8 |
| 30 to 39 | 9 |
| 40+ | 10 |
When posting scores be sure to check that you are entering the correct slope and course rating for the tees you played from, and if you played a course other than Coal Creek, be sure to enter it as an away score.
It will be my pleasure (or that of another lucky devil) to post all of the weekend tournament scores for anyone playing in our tournaments. So please do not post any score from a weekend CCMGA tournament (an exception to this rule is the Match Play Championship – individual players should post their scores as tournament scores after round one). This is to ensure that if there is an "habitually lucky golfer" who shoots low scores in tournaments, his score will be entered as a tournament (T) score. If this should become a regular phenomena, the USGA Handicap System will automatically take notice and adjust his handicap accordingly. However, I am sure that we do not have that "sandbagging" problem in the CCMGA.
For those of you playing in the Tuesday Night League, and anyone else for that matter, be sure to enter all of your nine-hole scores.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or E-Mail me.

The Tuesday Night League can accommodate only 24 teams and all openings have been filled. The openings were filled on a first come first served basis. Two teams, whose entry forms arrived after the 24 openings were filled, did not make the cut. It is hoped that members of those teams can play on other teams. Any CCMGA member can play as an alternate on any Tuesday Night League team. Anyone who is not currently affiliated with a team and is available to play on Tuesday nights as an alternate should call me at home with your name and phone number. I will compile a list and distribute it to the team captains. Please remember, only current members of CCMGA may play in the matches.
Information packages have been mailed to the captains of each Tuesday Night League team. Tee times have been assigned for each week. It is the responsibility of the team members to know their tee times and be on time for the match. We are ready for another great season. Good luck to all.

As in the past, we are tabulating points for the Player of the Year. Points are awarded to players who finish in the money as follows: first place = 50 points, second place = 40 points, third place = 30 points, fourth place = 20 points, fifth place = 10 points. All players entering a tournament are also awarded five points. The Club Championship, the Match Play Championship, and the two-day Two-Man Best Ball all are worth double points. At the end of the season the player with the most points is awarded the prestigious title of Player of the Year, a plaque or trophy, and the everlasting admiration of his peers. Additionally, the top twenty players will be eligible for the season ending Top 20 Shootout.
Due to a projected budgetary shortfall (less members have joined this year and more of you are playing in tournaments than anticipated), the CCMGA will not be able to provide free lunches other than the one scheduled after the May 10th Shamble. Sorry about that, but it's either that or reduce the prize money. We still hope to have group lunches after the Best-Ball and Member/Guest tournaments.
The Dave Pelz World Putting Championship is coming to Coal Creek in the near future. This event will be held on the Coal Creek putting green and is open to all. The course will be posting more information as it becomes available.
Remember, you must play in three CCMGA weekend tournaments to qualify for the Club Championship in August.
