MANASOTA FOSSIL CLUB

The Manasota Fossil Club was formed in 1997 to bring together those people in the Manatee and Sarasota County, Florida area who are interested in paleontology, local fossils and artifacts. We meet from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on the second Wednesday of most months, at the Las Palmas club house at 519 Albee Farm Road in Venice. This year no meetings will be held June through September. Visitors and new members are always welcome to attend.

Meetings usually feature a guest or member speaker and slide shows and/or fossil displays. Raffles of donated fossil related material are often held. We are a fairly informal group and leave time at each meeting to mingle, compare finds and try to identify those "mystery" fossils.

Group field trips are available to members from time to time, as we are able to secure invitations from phosphate mines and shell pits in the area. Screening for fossils in the Peace River is another favored activity. Since tax reform budget cuts have made the building of a museum at the Celery Fields site unlikely, we are now donating identifiable fossils to the Crowley Nature Preserve. They have a great educational program which includes a huge, very popular, "sand box" salted with our donated fossils. A small display of Celery Field fossils is set up as a library exhibit at the Fruitville Library in Sarasota.
