This is the method I use to make my pictures.

Making Pictures

Side view of canvas showing pins.

The process is one of cutting out whatever I want to put on to my padded canvas, and pinning it in place. Pinning allows me to change things around as needed. Eventually I iron the pieces in place permanently.

Step 1 - Basecoat

Step 1 - Basecoat

I begin with what I call a basecoat of background colors that more or less fit in with whatever picture I am trying to create. In this case I was asked to do a seascape. This is the basecoat step.

Step 2 - Establishing a light source

Step 2 - Establishing a light source

Next I determine the direction of lighting and put in some overlays to provide the illusion of a light source. This would involve making some shadows as well as some bright spots.

Step 3 - Creating Motion

Step 3 - Creating Motion

The next step is what I call creating motion. I want to draw the viewer's eye through the picture, so I put in a layer to move the line of vision into the picture. In step 2 the eye tended to go straight to the brightest part in the upper third of the picture, and then the diagonal streaks took  the eye off the page. Little if anything from the bottom two thirds attracted attention.

Step 4 - Adding details

Step 4 - Adding Details

All that remains now is to put in details. This can be time consuming as I check my progress at different times of day, in different lighting, at different distances, and from different angles. Eventually I arrive at something I like, which may or may not be what I started out with for an idea.

Low Tide

Eventually I have what I want and give it a name. Simple as that.
