Former students and others: I recently went to a local gun range to show an elderly gentlemen how to safely operate his handgun. He had purchased this handgun in the wake of September 11, 2001, and he had never even fired it. Upon getting to the range, we unexpectedly had to wait for over an hour while an instructor herded 60 people through the range portion of a so-called “refresher course" for those whose Michigan Concealed Pistol licenses were due to expire. These course participants queued up in a long, serpentine line waiting for their chance to put a quick 50 rounds downrange. After retrieving their own target, each would sign it as "proof" of successfully completing the range portion of this “course” and then they would quickly exit the range. While sitting and waiting for the range to clear and afford us the opportunity to use a shooting lane, I overheard one individual ask his “instructor” if he would “have to do this again in five years”. In other words, would he have to take another "refresher course" the next time that his license expires. The instructor replied, “Well, if they don’t change the law”! WHAT A JOKE! A RENEWAL CLASS IS NOT REQUIRED! Former students and others take note: Just read your renewal application. You'll see that a class is not required. Read it, and then put that $100 into range time, ammo. Better yet, take a kid shooing as well. CONCEALED PISTOL LICENSE RENEWAL INFORMATION 1. A license to carry a concealed pistol issued on or after July 1, 2003, is valid for five (5) years. 2. A license to carry a concealed pistol issued prior to July 1, 2003, is valid for three (3) years. 3. An application is considered a renewal if the applicant has received a concealed pistol license under compliance of the training requirements set forth in the Act after July 1, 2001. A concealed pistol license is renewed in the same manner as the original license, including fingerprints (see Application Information). 4. An individual must complete a pistol safety training course if renewing a license, for the first time, that was issued prior to July 1, 2001 (These have all since been renewed or they're expired, so this no longer applies.) 5. For an individual licensed after July 1, 2001, and subsequently applying for a renewal, completion of a pistol safety training course is not required. However, the applicant shall sign a statement certifying that he/she has completed at least three (3) hours of review of the pistol safety training course and has had at least 1 hour of firing range time in the 6 months immediately preceding the renewal application. That's it. Review the material that I gave you. Also, read the law as it stands today. A couple major changes are that you must immediately disclose that you're carrying if you're stopped by a law enforcement official, and there's absolutely zero tolerance for drinking any alcohol and carrying. Once you've reviewed and gone to the range, the State of Michigan actually trusts you to sign for yourself! READ the the law again, including changes such as the two that I mentioned above. Spend at least 3 hours reviewing the NRA book that I gave you as well as all of the other material in the packet that I put together. If you have any further questions, give me a call or send me an email. I'll answer your questions for free! Use the money that you save to get out and practice, and take a kid shooting, Shoot straight,
