For the Month of July 2003
Musings...
 Fort McHenry, Maryland
Independence Day is July 4th, as we all know, the day we declared our independence from British Rule way back in 1776. Today it has become a day to picnic away at the Lake, take in a game at the old ballpark or barbecue at home with family or friends, and some of the more idealistic shopowners think it's the perfect day to have the "Sale of the Year".
Whoopee!
And always the days' finale ends in bursting colors shot high into the air so we can "ooh" and "ahh" and the kids can shudder and squeal over the "fireworks that were far better than last years".
Sometimes before the days end, we find time to meditate on what it's all about --
Our freedom.
Our country is great, no one can deny this. But it's only great because of who we are, not who we are not. We are not British, we are not Italian, we are not Polish, we are not Mexican, we are not African, we are not Iranian. Did I leave a few nationalities out? Precisely! This is only a small fraction of who we are not.
Once our ancestors hit this soil intending to make this land their home, they became Americans. We became Americans. This is who we are. But we have the advantage of taking from all our ethnic roots the customs, behaviors, language, knowledge, skills, and yes even food from homelands now far, far away. Many peoples for many lands came together to make our "America". We truly are advantaged people to be able to draw on such a wealth of heritages as we have here in the U.S.
From our view point, it is the food we focus on. And in our autonomous wisdom, since we were feeling so diverse, this month we highlight Northern Italian cuisine.
On the 4th when you find yourself musing over the days events and get to the part where you are thankful for your freedom and our Country's diversity, remember, be especially thankful for the food!
And the moral of the story is...It's not the destination - it's the journey!
