Albert Albertsen (ter Heun), founder of the Terhune family, was a son of a 16th century Dutch family of French Huguenot origin. Though he was groomed to succeed his father in the family's lucrative ribbon weaving business, as a young man in 1637, he emigrated to the colony of New Netherlands where his valuable training was useless and he had to struggle for decades to regain his former status and standard of living.
Devoted to history and genealogy in equal measure, this book explores Albert's ancestral European homelands and the circumstances of his emigration. It describes where and how he and his descendants lived, worked and fought in our country's wars, as well as the stories of his descendant's migrations from Long Island to Somerset County, New Jersey, to Harrodsburg, Kentucky, to Johnson County, Indiana, and beyond.
This book traces over 2400 descendants through twelve generations and includes brief histories of several allied families. Among the surnames: Ackerman, Adams, Anderson, Ballew, Banta, Brown, Brunnemer, Canary, Cooper, Davis, Demotte, Duncan, Henderson, Hunt, Kesterson, McNutt, Miller, Nay, Ragsdale, Robertson, Robinson, Schuck, Smock, Tracy, Utterback, Van Arsdale, Van Arsdall, Vandivier, Williams.
