This should probably be on my math/science pages, but it's worth listing right up front. Irving Langmuir gave a fantastic talk long ago (1953) on the subject of "pathological science." The full text and figures are available at Langmuir Talk . Everyone, not just scientists, should read this. It was published in some science mag about 15 years ago but otherwise has not been widely circulated.

Sorry -- the "family news" page has been deleted on the grounds of obsolescence and being boring. You'll have to call us to find out what's up :-) .

A small collection of calculators and analysis tools, primarily for the Mac: ToolsPage This now includes a little info on R, which I have to say is incredibly smooth and powerful.

And some cool excel workbooks to do various stuff: Excel Files

Here we go with a music page: MusicInfo

And boy is it great to be back playing music again.

My so-called blog page is here--and is dead .

I got my VERY OWN 404 page. (Well, I copied someone's) You know, that annoying message you get when you click on a busted link? Well, click here to see my favorite.

We love our doggies..but note with sorrow the passing of Zygmund in August of 2007. We now have a new puppy, Kiri (named for a certain New Zealand soprano. Here's an early pic or two of her:

That's me--a blowup of a very small photo. Someday I'll get a better one.

For example, here's my high school yearbook photo, from 19-never-mind:

Connections and keywords to my life

High Schools:

Oyster River High , Durham, NH.

Lexington High , Lexington MA (1972. See the Alumni subpage)

Colleges:

Colby College, Waterville, ME (1977)

Brown University, Providence RI (grad school, Physics, 1979)

Jobs:

RCA Automated Systems, Burlington, MA, 1979-1984. This company is now nonexistent.

Adaptive Optics Associates, Cambridge MA. 1984-present.

As it happens, AOA has been owned by: UTC (1986-2000), Metrologic (2001-2006), EssexCorp(2006-1007), and now Northrop Grumman. All I can say is: never ever EVER think about working for Nor-Grum. What an appallingly awful, corrupt company.

Outside interests and obsessions

I used to play the clarinet and sax, but gave it up for kids and windsurfing (but see the music page for my entry into the string section). In the old days, I played w/ the Concord Band and the Brookline Symphony. In the early 70's I attended Amherst Summer Music Center (Raymond ME) and Midwestern Music and Art Camp (Lawrence, KS). If anyone out there was in West Side Story (1972), Carousel (1974), or other Concord (MA) summer theatre of that era, hey: I was in the pit.

True fanatics recognize this little item. They are available from Jim West .

Official rec.games.pinball lapel pin

My primary hobby consists of playing, fixing, collecting, and thinking about pinball machines. I presently own 2 EMs (electromechanical, i.e., no computer chips) in good condition, plus the usual array of computer simulations. For recommendations, links, and pictures, go to My Pinball Page

If you're somewhere near Acton MA and want to get rid of an EM pinball machine, please let me know. I can always use more :=) .

Oh, yeah: my family

You can reach these people at this address: my wife, Julie , my daughter Alix (aka Sasha) and my son Luke .

They have personal e-mail addresses, available on request to deserving fans :-) .
