Unlike most of my records, LOUDNESS 2 is not structured chronologically; the time-flow is more cylical. For example, the heretical one-two of "very just fine" and "Stake In Your Heart" represent the earliest realizations within this phase, but they appear later in the song cycle. There are visions of succubae past ("Independence Day"), desperate ruminations on the loneliness of dysfunctional togetherness ("Picking Up The Peaces" and "I Don't Miss You"), perhaps my sweetest and most soulful weird-ass love song ("the hole thing"), some patented Dolph-tastic self-excoriation ("Congratulations, Loser" and "Facade Of The Year"), self-defense ("Courtship of My Kids' Father" and "Tease"), and all-too-rare bursts of giddy rampant-running ("Phil The Salmon," "Hurry Hurry Hurry" and "Way Out Loud"). In general, I am prouder of this set of songs than any collection to date. That is, admittedly, not an entirely scientific assessment, as much of my admiration comes from knowing how much effort these songs took. I spent the bulk of the years represented herein walled up by my own fear and sense of failure. This paralysis cost me a lot, including my marriage. Looking back, it seems that all I accomplished was to survive and to create these 17 pieces of music. Most days, that feels good enough. |
