Computerized Quality of Wins Index includes all 550 high school football teams in Illinois
The ratings on this website are calculated using an iterative mathematical technique developed by David L. Wilson, a mathematician at the University of Wisconsin. Unlike well-known mathematical models, such as the Dunkel Index and Sagarin Ratings, Wilson's method is not designed to predict future outcomes. Rather, it is a technique for measuring the quality of a team's overall season, based on strength of schedule and won-lost record.
Ratings are calculated by initially setting each team's value to 500 points, averaging the values of all of its opponents, and then adding 100 for each win and subtracting 100 for each loss. Ratings are then repeatedly re-calculated thousands of times to take opponents' changes into account.
All high school football teams in Illinois are listed on this site in order of rating, as well as alphabetically by school name. School names are typically listed first, followed by city names. For example, Benet Academy is listed as "Benet Lisle." Due to input file space constraints, abbreviations were used in many cases. A few school names may therefore be difficult to find on the alphabetical list.
