Discussion of John Queen's Will Dated 1797

Dear Chuck and Carol,
I went to the Seattle Public Library yesterday, and reviewed the VA 1790 federal census index, looking for counties where Buxtons and a William Sheppard were, and also checking for a family with the surname of Avis/Avise, since that is what Priscillar's last name looks like to me.
I found a James Buxton in Nansemond Co. in 1783 and 1784, with several Shepherds nearby, including Lidey/Lydia Shepherd and Solomon Shephard. There was also a John Avis in Nansemond in 1784..
Then I found a William Shepherd in Northumberland Co., along with a William Avis and a James Avis, all in St. Stephen's Parish, in 1782. But no Buxtons there.
Finally, I found a William Shepherd in Princess Anne Co., along with a Francis Avis, in 1785.
I was hoping that we'd find only ONE cluster, and then know that pursuing it would be a likely solution. Unfortunately, this gives us several possibilities.
But I am wondering if we could find a will for William Shepherd (the CORRECT one), and it would contain a connection with John Queen and shed new light on at least one branch of the Queen line.

Hi guys,
I forgot all about having this document until Reiley found some of
these names in Nansemond"
19 June 1769-14 Aug 1769, Will of John Queen, Parish of Suffolk, Nansemond
County. Wife Mary and the child she is now supposed to be pregnant with;
Priscilla dau. of Abraham and Isabel Avis: James Edwards; William Shepherd
Roberts, so of Wm Shepherd and Lydia Roberts; Levi Solomon and Moses Murphee
sons of my bro Daniel Murphee. Exrs. Wm. Shepherd and Solomon Shepherd, Jr.
Wit: John Agnew, Thomas Shepher, Jesse Fulghan.
CQ-These Murphees may be children of a previous marriage of Mary's. And
Reiley, looks like you were right about the Avis. Here is the rest of that
correspondence.
Levi, Solomon and moses Murphee are middle sons of Daniel Murphee. The
writer has estimated the birthdates of these three men as about 1751, 1757
and 1762, which would have made them ages 18, 12 and 8, respectively, when
John Queen made his will in 1769. All kinds of questions can be raised. Why
only these three, out of the eight sons of Daniel Murphree? Or, is this pure
coincidence, and Daniel Murphree of Bertie has nothing to do with the Queen
will? More information is needed in order to reach conclusions.
An estate record exists in Prince William County for a John Queen, who could
have been the father of the JOhn Queen of Nansemond. In 1738, James Harbert
was appointed administrator of the estate of John Queen. On 27 Apr 1742,
Eleanor Pritchet, admx, for James Harbert, submitted to the court the
settlement estate records for John Queen. She showed money spent but no
heirs were named.
As early as Sep 1701, one Elnathan Tarte included in his Norfolk County,
Virginia will, the mention of his granddaughter Mary Queene, "said Mary's
father John Queene, This information may be useful in furthering the
maternal ancestry of Daniel Murphree. It could turn out that his maternal
grandfather was Elnathan Tarte. More research on the Queen and Tarte
families needs to be known. The daughter of Elnathan Tarte married John
Queene and had a daughter Mary Queene.
Unknown possibility: John Queene and Ms. Tarte could have had a son John as
well as a daughter Mary. If the elder John Queen died and his widow
remarried a Murphree and had a son Daniel Murphree, then the connection
would be made.
CQ-I also have a copy of the will of Elnathan Tarte, but the only
significant name is---unto my grand daughter Mary Queene...said Mary's
father John Queene. Sorry I didn't think of this sooner.

What do you make of this?

Charles,
My thoughts are exactly like yours. The person who sent me this is a
Murphree ancestor and he can't figure out how this could be. Unless
Priscilla married one of his boys, and the Murphrees are from a first
marriage of Mary, and the Shepherds are grandkids.
I'll have to try to make more sense of this, but at least we have a
location to look in. Maybe we can find more info in Nansemond Co., VA.
