POE FAMILY

This is the headstone for my great-great-grandfather on my mother's side.

He is buried at Gum Springs Baptist Church in Moncure, Chatham County, North Carolina.

Thomas enlisted in the Confederate Army July 7, 1862 at age 29. Thomas was assigned to Company E, 63rd Regiment, NC 5th Calvary Regiment, CSA. He was taken prisoner in March 1865 when he deserted the army at the siege of Petersburg, VA. He was a prisoner of war in Howard County, IN until the end of the war. He was a carpenter by trade and helped to build the Chatham County Court House.
