Tips and How-To

Great Walls by Michel Laurine

What does faux cost?

If you haven't worked with a faux finisher before, you might be wondering about the cost of painted wall treatments.  While each situation is different, these are some general guidelines:
  • Faux costs about two to three times what you would expect to pay to have your room painted one color
  • Damaged walls, heights, or previous wallpapering in the room may increase costs
  • Art & Edifice charges a refundable fee for consultations
    • This covers time and travel expenses, as well as the fact that our artisan spends a great deal of time and personal attention with her clients and often helps with color questions while in your home.  This fee does not just cover an "estimate", it offers you the chance to get advice from a decorating professional.  Consultation fees are REFUNDED IN FULL when you contract work with Art & Edifice.

How will you price my project?

There is no single answer to this common question.  Faux prices are a combination of:

  • the size of the space
  • the number of working days
  • the cost of materials (i.e., glazes are much more economical than heavy plaster textures)
  • the uniqueness of the finish
  • the cost of special-order items like stencils, Modellos, or gold leaf

Does Art & Edifice travel this far?

Our artisan prides herself on covering the Houston area.  Drives are just a fact of city life!  Projects that require extraordinary drives for many days may require a travel fee, which can be discussed at your consultation and included in any estimates.  Feel free to contact her with any questions.

Are faux finishes durable?

Most are surprisingly durable!  Art & Edifice uses high-quality glazes (professional, to-the-trade, not home-store brands) that are more durable than house paints.  We NEVER put a delicate texture in a high-traffic or delicate area.  Our artisan can leave you simple cleaning instructions after your project.

My estimate says three days to paint a small room, why so long!?

Faux is specialty painting done in layers.  Usually, the bottom layers must dry overnight before work on the next layer can continue.  Faux also requires extra prep work that regular painting does not.  Our estimates try to give a realistic schedule for projects, and not promise what we can't deliver.  It's possible to find painting companies that say they can complete your project more quickly, but Art & Edifice strives for quality over speed.

Can you faux finish over our existing paint?

Many times, yes.  If your existing wall paint is sound and of the correct quality and sheen, faux finishing might be able to go right on top of it, saving time and money.  Ask our artisan about this and she'll be glad to answer your questions at your consultation.

Do you provide a list of past client references?

Our past clients are highly satisfied.  If you require a list of references, please alert our artisan prior to your consultation and she will be glad to provide a list.  We trust that you will respect references' evening family time when making your calls.  In the interest of privacy, all references will be alerted to expect your call before their name and contact information is released.
