About Faux Finishes

Faux is a French term for “false” or “fake”.  Faux is the craft of creating the illusion of different materials on walls, ceilings, and furniture surfaces.  Faux techniques have been used for centuries: in Egyptian temples, in Pompeii and Greece, even to decorate rooms in the Palace of Versailles after the project ran over budget.

Why is faux used in decorating and design?
  • To personalize environments
  • To match an existing material that is no longer available (12-inch oak floorboards)
  • To enable us to decorate with materials that are too expensive, no longer available in nature, or too difficult to transport (ivory or huge slabs of marble)
  • To create a hand-crafted atmosphere
  • To create the illusion of aged materials
  • To beautify utilitarian surfaces (fire-safe metal entry doors)

Why would I want to use faux in my home or business?
  • Many finishes grow more beautiful with age
  • Easier to coordinate with existing furnishings than manufactured wall coverings
  • Patterns can repeat as often as needed
  • Washable and durable
  • Can create the illusion that your room is smaller or larger than its actual dimensions
  • No visible seams like wallpaper
  • Paint finishes can be applied to almost ANY SURFACE
