Round Flat Container

Sometimes it's hard to find just the right size of a planter for those oddball places.  In this case, I needed a low, round container that would support vinca vine as it trailed down the sides.  I wanted it to cover a big rock that is at the entrance to my home. Following up on one of the many good suggestions from my colleagues at GardenWeb, I decided to check the Dollar Store.

Below is what I started out with.  Diameter is 17 inches--and all for $1.  Problem is, of course, that plastic just will not do, especially for the entrance of a home.  After putting holes in the base for drainage, I decided to cover the planter with sphagnum moss. Using spray glue, I sprayed a section at a time and pressed on the moss.
Flip it over and do the rim, too. The finished planter, disguised with sphagnum moss.
Here's the planter on the rock.  I'm hoping the vines will go out in all directions and cover the rock.  I will put some purple alyssum in for color. As fast as I did this planter (5 minutes), I figured some of the moss would fall off and it did.  Here, after a very intense rain, are some bare spots.  They are easy to patch up with the spray can and additional sphagnum moss.
