1964 Jefferson Nickel
Why were so many Nickels struck in 1964. Even today, forty years later, I'm coming across them from time to time; a couple of decades ago they were still unusually common among circulated coins.
I couldn't find anything on-web, but this site, CoinFacts.com seems to indicate that over a billion nickels were struck in 1964, compared with less than 180 million in 1963 and about 137 million in 1965.
