Learn more about the man who was wounded four times during his distinguished Civil War service, during which he rose from the rank of Major to Major General. Read the Hayes diaries or get the scoop on the controversial election of 1876, and that election's strong parallels to the election of 2000. Opened in 1914 and billed as "America's First Presidential Library," this museum is located on the 19th President's Spiegel Grove estate in Fremont, Ohio. Hayes lived on this estate beginning in 1873 prior to his presidency, and then following his term of office and until his death in 1893.
