Check back often to see more of this interesting way to fire pottery.

What is Raku?

Raku is one of the first forms of pottery based on a very simple, yet unique firing process.  Although the pieces are low fired and porous making them obsolete for most function, the texture, color, and form of each piece still captivate the discerning eye.  The most distinctive aspect of Raku is color.  No other form of pottery can boast of the shinny coppers or the rich blues that meld together in a free form pattern over the form.  Other colors may be achieved as well, but each piece is unique. The wicking of fire, gasses, and carbon combine with the laws of nature to form the final glaze.  The technique involves fashioning the form of the special clay body, firing in an electric kiln to bisque, then glazing and firing outdoors in a special kiln.  In the outdoor gas kiln, the clay is taken to 1800 degrees which melts the glaze and adheres it to the clay body.  The pieces are then taken out quickly while still red hot and placed in a nest of paper, pine straw, or other combustibles.  When the piece ignites the combustibles, the oxygen is then reduced with the aid of a washtub or trash can.  Nature forms the rest of the process hidden under the covering and behind the smoke and heat.  The results are astonishing to behold.  Many of my pieces are based on free form design with added attention to texture.  Each piece is original and unique; some are free form while others are wheel-thrown.  If you look closely, you may see Asian influences of the Orient.
